What is the danger of over powering a boat. I have a boat that is rated for a 200 hp and if I was to put a 225 horsepower motor on it, what is the dangers or downs other than speed. Are the transoms not stout enough for a 225. My boat is a 19 ft pantera 2. It currently has a mariner 150 with a 5 bladed prop. It will top out at 53 loaded with 2 people. I would like to do around 65 – 68 mph. Would a 200 hp get me there. Its a 1990 basscat pantera 2 boat

do you mean other than not being legal to fish tournaments? voiding you boat insurance? and just plain ol dumb?

Thats alittle harsh to call someone dumb. Its not a good idea. You might not see that much of a differnce between the 200 and the 225. I see people doing that all the time. I am not for it but, I do see people over powering their boats with more motor than they should have.

First reply is a little harsh no doubt. Dumb not really. Of course, BCB or anyone else will recommend you doing it. But back in the older days before everything got so legtigious it was done often. Now a days people dont do it much mainly due to harder to get away with. Insurance as mentioned above might almost impossible to get and I would NEVER recommend any one running a boat with no insurance. Tournaments are another problem. Give anyone a reason to protest you because they cant catchem and you did and they will take that opportunity…even though we all know you having 25 more horses more than likely didnt help you catch fish but enjoy the day a slight bit more Big difference between the older 200 2.5s and a 3.0 225. In weight, performance and fuel and oil consumption. Will the transoms take it? No one is going to tell you yes but BCB has the strongest transom in the industry, no one can touch this thing. Can you do it…sure but you are risking a lot. The decision is yours to make. If you do it please let us know what that thing will do my guess is she will run like a skint Cat Saying all of that if you put a new 3.0 200 EFI (they are HARD to find) or a 200 Opti you are going to see such a big difference you wont be sorry you didnt so the 225. Shouldve started using big words BEFORE Christmas so I could ask for a dictionary…………. One thing is that the owner has a 1990 Pantera model. This boat will be heavier than newer models. The 200 should get you to around 66-68. But again, unless you find a used 200 you will NEVER recover your investment. If you are the original owner of the boat, you have had it for(ever) a long time and if maintained in good shape, you could drop the 200 on it.
