Boater vs non boater

Need to take my mind off some things so thinking about fishing the Savannah BFL this spring. Trying to decide as boater or non. Only reason I want to use my boat (which I have not sold) is I have some disc problems that are ok now but afraid I may draw some nut that kills my back running down lake (of course he wont be in a Cat) Im 52 pretty good shape other than back. I look at profiles of guys that have won as boaters and I see most have Professional designations. I do not mind fishing from back of boat. You guys have a lot more experience at draw tourneys than me so should I sign as non boater? I am not really concerned about 100 vs 200 entry fee. Thanks

if you have never fished one, i would go non boater just to see how they run things and be up front and ask your boater to take it easy because of your back problems!

I have similar issues to you regarding backs. Ive had 2 operations and several injections. You are correct you cannot predict how a draw partner would drive. Easy to him may be very harsh for you. Also hanging on to the steering wheel is a big advantage as far as bracing yourself. Wrecking your back to have a better shot at winning a few thousand?? Definitley not worth the risk. Kind of like russian roullette with little payout. Now if you knew your partner and how he would respond to requests from you it may be a different story. I would NOT risk it!!!Irv

I fished the BFL in Texas as a non boater and at 59 I have been beat up by the best. NO one will care for your back like you will in the drivers seat. I think you would learn from your non-boaters as much as you would from fishing from the back of the boat. There are some considerate boaters and then there are the 35 year old speed demons that are bullit proof. (I even remember that age.) I learned a lot from being a non-boater, but I cant take the ride anymore. Best of luck on your decision.georgeGeorge

I fished non boater last year and boater this year in the Cowboy BFLs. I figured If I was gonna suck, I was gonna suck doin my own deal. Im 37, have a P4, and when Im in a tourny, I run it pretty much full out…..but If I drew someone who said please back off some so I dont get all jacked up, Id oblige…but thats what my momma taught me. Ive learned a little from both boaters and nonboaters. Having done both sides, If money and such was no issue, Id do boater, that way you control everything. If you wanna do 50 instead of 70mph, thats on you. If you wanna stay in one spot all day, its on you…doesnt matter if your partner grumbles or not. Bryan. P4.

Thanks for the replies. . Ive just fished clubs and some 25-35 boat tourneys so nothing on this scale. More than likely I;ll just be a donor. I know a little bout Keowee, and Hartwell I like so whatever happens, happens. Its sort of a bucket list thing. Ill have on my BCB garb. Really like the new BCB life jacket I just purchased/
