Bow mounted sonar/GPS

Has anyone mounted a large screen (10″) sonar/GPS unit on the bow? Id appreciate any advice/pictures. Any space problems?

Mounted a HDS 10 on bow of 2012 Eyra with Ram Mount. Didnt like Ram Mount on bow. Hard to get in and out of boat—trip hazard. Cover wont fit with unit mounted on Ram mount, sticks up to high. Hard to tighten and loosen hand knob to remove, not enough room to get hand down there. Took Ram Mount off and mounted HDS 10 in the well. Like it much better in well. Cover fits boat with unit mounted in well. Its tight on space but fits just fine. If you need to move it a smidge, file holes in gimball mount-not new holes in boat. Dont think a 12″ unit would fit in well.

I had an HDS 10 at the bow of my Sabre FTD on the Big Ram mount. Folded down when not in use and was not in the way of cover. Always folded it down when trailering or when cover was on. Folded down was great protection. I have an HDS 8 at the bow of my Pantera 2 with same setup. Both work equally well. I just like the unit up a little higher when I am fishing. I have an 1199 on my new Cougar mounted on a 12 inch Balzout. Solid mount and can be folded when you want. Used to use the Ram mount but the Balzout is much better.

A friend I fish with sometimes switched to a Ballzout mount for a while. He didnt like it and ended up putting his Ram mount back on. I have never used anything at the bow but a Ram, and I have not had a reason to switch. Everybody likes something different does not mean one is better or worse.Dan

I always hear one of the biggest complaints with Ram mounts is they wont tighten down. Ive got one of these and have a HDS10 on the bow that has never moved. This tool will also get it loosened quick and no more problems with hand tightening. http://www.amazon.com/Mounts-RAM-KNOB9H … ccessories

Thanks for all the great info. Im going ahead with my plans to replace the 898c with the larger unit. Cant see as well as I once could.Anyone need an 898c at a good price?

BTW Redngoo, is your big ram the standard length on the short one?
