Some of our boat ramps in Northern Indiana are very rough with plenty of pot holes. With the bow untied I can actually lift the bow off the roller with one hand. When backing down to launch, with the boat untied, the bow bounces very hard on the front bow roller. It appears, that under these conditions the trailer frame flexes considerable causing this problem. I’m am afraid bow damage is going to be the result. The boat is a 2015 Puma with matching dual axle Basscat Trailer (there have been no modifications to the boat or trailer). Has anyone else had this problem – any solutions besides staying tied up all the way to the water?
Right off hand, I don’t know of anything you could do. I always keep the boat hooked up to the winch strap, until I get out of the truck to get in the boat to back it off the trailer.
Billius, Thanks for responding
Same here if it’s a steep ramp. Our ramps are usually very smooth though even the dirt ones.
For years I have fished our small tournaments (20 -25 boats) with a Sabre. Never had this problem. Kind of feel like I will be the only boat stopping the waters edge to untie.
Thanks for the responses.
I prep for launch in wat i call the prepping area. But i never unhook my bow strap until at waters edge. I try to be courteous and time efficient. Hope others understand. If not i feel they havent been around the boating world long to understand my purpose in doing so.
Thanks for the reply. Can I assume your boat will bounce like mine or do you do this for safety – for the boat coming off the trailer.
They all bounce until you strap the bow down. There is likely 2000 lbs in the rear of rhat boat compared to 1000 in front. It’s been like that for 20 years that I have run a cat. Most other boats are likely will do the same. Just strap the boat down until you get close to the water or until you get on flat land. It might save you some embarrassment one day.
Phil you hitting the holiday spirits early or did spell check over react mine also will bounce i also can lift the bow if i want, in my opinion Bass cat trailer’s are the best on the market i have never had a better trailer pull’s amazing
Sorry. Spell check and i cant see anymore
Easy to explain. The Sabre has a mid tank location. Your Puma has rear tanks. With the rear tank boats, you can lift the front of the bow off the roller by hand when its not strapped down. Sabre, Pantera, and Caracal (With mid tanks) all will have more weight on the front bow roller.
Answer to your question: Keep the bow strapped until its in the launch position. Unhook the bow. Climb in the boat and launch.
I leave mine hooked and cranked tight, and you want that eye pushed up touching the roller when you power load it, its its a few inches behind the roller its gunna bounce on bad roads. I like how the boats sit on the trailer, I was able with both my sabre and now my puma when launching, just as the boat starts to float up in the rear, unhook the eye and step into the boat, by the time I’m plopping down into the seat, the shift from my body weight has the boat sliding off the trailer…
Thanks for the responses, I now know that there is nothing wrong with my boat or trailer and that is what I wanted to know.
