I was finishing up repairing the brakes on my 2013 Cougar trailer and broke one of the flexible brake lines at the fitting. Any idea where to find a replacement or how to repair the line with a new fitting?
Take it to advance, auto zone, NAPA, etc. Easy to match it up.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Thanks Old Timer, Thats what I was hoping for…
I had to replace mine in 2009- there were no local replacements- my dealer looked all over our area- they had to order it from basscat
Wouldnt be surprised if your local KIA dealer had something that would work. And there is always the local hydraulic hose company option. We have multiple places around here that will make hard and soft brake lines while you wait. They mainly need to know the length, and have a sample of the fitting on each end… Also, you can go the real auto parts house way, find a flex hose with threaded connectors on both ends, then go look in their hydraulic fittings boxes and search for a banjo fitting with the correct female thread on the other end. 1/2 done. Now find whatever it takes to match the other end of the hose to the end of the brake line, probably a female-to-female type thing. Ive done this on a couple of very old cars I helped someone work on.Last edited by oldtimer57 on August 13th, 2017, 4:00 am, edited 1 time in total.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
You can substitute locally in most cases, though if you cant Parts would be glad to ship one to you.
Update: For now, I went to auto zone and got the correct steel tubing and bent it to fit. Test drove it (to the lake of course) this morning and everything seems fine now. I am getting ready to travel and really didnt have time to chase parts all week. The next time I need to service the brakes I will go back to the flexible line. For now Im tired of bleeding brakes and messing with it. I will get the hose now and will have it on hand for the next time.I used a 60″piece and a30″ piece with a union. I did have to bend a small loop in it to get the length right and avoid trying to flare the tubing. For the record if anyone searches this topic, the UFP calipers take a 3/16″ brake line with a 3/8-24 thread on the coupler.Last edited by neilb on August 13th, 2017, 4:10 pm, edited 1 time in total.
So i been following this thread and reading. I say if the steel tubing is working why replace. The only place you need flexible is where you have movement. Such as where your coming from the frame. I personally would prefer the steel in all areas except where the flexible is needed. Look at your vehecles brake line they will be steel tubing except coming from the frame to the caliber or wheel cylinder.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
Im missing something. You said “broke one of the flexible lines”. Which is NOT made of steel/metal. That implies (to me) the flexible rubber hose that connects a caliper to the hard brake line normally…Do you have flexible (rubber) tubing somewhere else? On mine, a hard line runs from the master cylinder (directly connected to the solenoid behind it) to a T near the drivers side wheel. There is a “T” there that has hard lines that go to each wheel area where they transition to rubber to reach the caliper. Since (on mine, anyway) all of the hard lines from the front to each side of the axle are all tied to the frame directly (thru the welded-in washers or whatever they are) theres no real need for any flex until you run from frame to axle which is sprung and moves. One other note, Id suggest buying some rubber tubing (like fuel line or whatever is handy) and cut it into 2″ pieces and slit open on one side longitudinally. Slide one over the brake line (hard line) at every retaining washer, then slide the tubing inside the washer. I found some wear on mine from vibration between the washer retainer and the hard line. No more.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Oldtimer, my 2013 trailer has flexible lines from the actuator all the way to both calipers. I didnt actually break the line, I broke the fitting that threads into the caliper. Redngoo, you are correct, the only problem is when I need to service the brakes the next time I will have to break the system open because the rigid line is the one between both calpers. I dont have flex coming out of a tee like the older systems. Hope this clears up any confusion. I can add pics if needed, LOL
