My trailer has begun acting funny when I put the truck in reverse. It tries to lock up briefly. I checked the brake fluid level and found some fluid in the res. but it is no where near full. Also, there is about 2 inches of play in the coupler. Do I need to fill it up? What type of recommended fluid should I use. Is there a release in the event that the brakes lock up when trying to back that thing up? Any test I can do to make sure everything is working right? Thanks Guys
You should have a little silver piece that goes in the coupler to prevent the coupler from going back and engauging the brakes. Also there is a tab under the coupler that is a release too but it wont keep them released if the coupler is bad. Brake fluid works but do not get it on the trailer paint that stuff eats through anything that isnt plastic it seems. You can see some of the paint gone around the fill hole on older trailers if they have gotten careless with the fluid. Good luck. Judd Lasiter PS – Been out to Fork and done any good? I went a couple of weeks ago and couldnt get on the deep bite but found a few shallow in the grass.
We suspect the solenoid is becoming slow and beginning to fail. Judd has given you some help above on a temp fix.
Where exactly is this silver piece? I dont think I have one. I have been beating them up at PK and Ray Roberts pretty good. I had 30-40 in my last trips to both lakes. Most were small schoolies on a drop shot, but i did manage a 6, a 5, a 4, and a hand full of 2-3s. Ive spent more on drop shot weight recently than I care to admit. Good to hear from you Judd, take care buddy. BCB, is there any danger to trailering my boat? Can I wait until winter to have it fixed? Ive got a 2 hour tow this up comming weekend.
I remember noticing that my trailer lights had become unhooked on the way home. After reading other post, that would mean the solenoid had no juice right, so no wonder….is that correct? I never realized the trailer harness was powering the brakes. Live and learn.
That is probably the issue. Gotta have back up lights.
That silver piece should be in the packet that you were given when you bought the boat, it is an L shaped metal piece that goes where the pin in the actuator goes back and forth to prevent it from going back and engauging the brakes. As BCB said you have to have power to the trailer to get the brakes to not lockup when backing so that was your problem I would bet. I have heard the Ray Bob has been good this year…I need to get up there sometime. It will be November before I get to go anywhere besides Fork and Cedar Creek now. Fall JC Outdoors trail starts this weekend w/ the Spring championship and 2 championships in October will keep me off of them. But I LOVE Fork in the fall when everyone is out deer hunting, the lake isnt near as busy. I hate to fish in a crowd…to a fault really. You should come fish the JC fall trail if you dont hunt, it is a good time with a bunch of great people. JL
Sounds like a blast, but we are expecting our second child in November. So, Ill just have to stay close to home and sneek out to RR when I can. I will certainly give you some inside info. when you are headed this way. Just let me know when you are coming. Usually a good rock bite when it cools off good.
Sounds good maybe we can hook up and you can show me how to get around up north. I normally dont venture past Wolfe Island much since the boat lanes arent marked and I like my lower unit JL
