Brakes on the trailer

Hi, how do you know if the braking is not functioning? Am I supposed to feel different when brakes are applied with the trailer than without it? I suspect that the plug is not the correct one – I believe that I have the plug with 4 wirings while it should have 5??? how many wirings the plug should have for the trailer with brakes?Thanks, D

We assume it is a 2009 model boat, then yes you should have a five (5) pin plug. If you have disc brakes you would not be able to back up your rig on a four pins harness, were they working.

4 pin to 5 pin adapter less than $10 at most auto parts store. Installation is very simple… you can see from this youtube video:

Yes, I am able to back up the trailer. I just checked the plug and it has 5 wirings, my mistake. I just brought the boat home and I still think the braking is not working. Advice?

try unplugging the harness and backing up a hill. The brakes should apply and you will notice. This should give you a good starting point to determine if they are working. Also can you feel any slop (sliding) in the coupler? What makes you think they are not working?
