Bunk fastener tip

Hey Folks,I was under my boat inspecting the bottom and noticed a loose bunk bolt (lag screw). Tried to snug it up and found that it would not tighten. I removed the screw and found that the threads were badly corroded and for the most part, gone. Upon checking the rest, I found three that were missing and the rest were loose. I replaced all of the bunk screws with galvanized ones. When I installed the new screws, I coated the threads with wood glue to help them stay tight. My trailer is a 2009. Might be worthwhile to give yours a look now and then.Scott

I had the same situation with my 09 trailer,didnt think about using wood glue.I put silicone on them and tightned them up,so far they are holding tight.

Most wood glues are not waterproof use tight bond three or resoursanol (unsure of spelling) it is a powder glue that you mix with water when it dries it is waterproof. Dont let it dry on your hands clean up is a *!+@#

great topic and tips. i actually just bought the lag bolts the other day to replace mine. the bolt heads on miine are about corroded away. im suspecting salt water immersion and not properly decontaminated

Use stainless screws, nuts, washers, and lock washers. You can also use self locking nuts that wont come loose. For keeping all those nuts tight use Locktite! It comes in three types. Blue is the easiest to loosen if you need to pull the bolt later. Rad is very tough to loosen. Green is extremely tough and would not recommend using it. Agree on the stainless but if you are using lag bolts from the bottom into the wood loctite is the wrong propduct. If you use carriage bolts or some type of machine screws with a nut the loctite is perfect. Warning using carriage bolts and loctite can pose a future problem, when the bolt wears, compresses the lumber, and gets loose you may not be able to tighten them as the bolt may spin before the nut turns. ok, since were on this topic, is there a special staple used to hold the carpet in place? i looked for ss staples at lowes, bu didnt see any. the old staples had completely corroded away.

yes use stainless or monel metal look for a fastner specialist and make calls do not travel until you are sure they have what you need.Irv
