Buzzbait knowledge

Blade size being the same, you can fish a lighter buzz bait slower. You would want the heavy one to fish fast.I usually dont fish them with a trailer hook because I fish them over grass and brush a lot and found myself getting hung up too much.

Been fishing buzz baits since the day the original Lunker Lure became available. Probably half of the many hundreds caught have been hooked on only the trailer hook.

All of the above matches my experience but two more things you can keep in mind:-A heavier bait will fall faster on the pause at the edge of a dock or weed line.-Keep in mind if they are “right hand” or “left hand” rotation. When fishing docks this is important so that it runs itself into the dock. For example, if you are going right to left down a bank, and you are in the front of the boat, you will likely want a bait that moves right to left, the back deck angler in the same boat will do best to fish a bait that moves left to right. I dont remember off the top of my head which manufacturers make which, but if you look at them head on you can tell from the orientation of the blades which way they will move.

I love to fish buzzbaits and have a few things I like to do that I think makes a difference. I think it needs to squeak! Take a hook file and rough the edges of the blade and the face of the rivet where they articulate. This gives it a good squeak and I wont fish a buzzbait that doesnt squeak. Trailer books are a must. If you are fishnng open water say on points or flats and even around docks consider turning your trailer hook down. Obviously a mess in wood or grass but open water trailers turned down will also give you better hookups on short strike fish Just my thoughts Good fishin Doug
