Topic: Catch in the steering

I have a 2000 Cougar with 225 Opti, manual jack plate, 24 Fury, unsure at the pad height, I dont keep the boat at the house. Anyway, the boat performs flawlessly but I do notice what I would call a “catch” when turning left, turning right is smooth as it can be. When turning left it seems like i have a consistent catch ever couple inces in steering wheel turn. This is at like 3000-3500 rpms. It did the same thing with a 25 fury. Anyway, i can usually find the “sweet spot” when I trim to eliminate it or at least most of it. It does this with a normal load. I dont tournament fish but I do carry my share of rods, reels, and tackle. I dont know what it will tach out at and dont really care because 4000 rpms is about all I ever need.Would this “catch” that i have described be something to do with motor height, torque, etc? Hopefully I have supplied enough information for a knowledable guess. Thanks,

We will only suggest that you take the boat to a highly qualified mechanic that is very knowledgable about hydraulic steering. Steering is absolutely nothing to question or inquire about and us to give you any answer, your life depends on it.

Could be a problem in the hydraulic pump that is the helm. Actually, quite likely is.This has got to be addressed by someone as described above.

I have a 1998 Jaguar my steering kept spinning in a circle trying to keep the boat straight did not use boat until repaired needed new steering cylinderDo not take a chance its not fun when steering goes been there

My classic was doing that and it had a leak in the seals of the steering cylinder on the motor check your fluid I bet your either out or low and it has air in the system had mine fixed at Sam rayburn 180 dollars

My Classic had some air in the line too causing it to skip/catch. Good pump/bleeding system took care of it.
