My partner and I are trying to purchase a Basscat from a gentleman in Alabama. My partner is going to be the owner of record and he lives in Georgia. His bank is telling him we need a certificate of origin but the seller doesnt have one. Is this something we can get from Basscat? Any Georgia boat owners on here?
Call the factory-870-481-5135, they will not be able to provide an orginal copy but should be able to get you what you need I just went through this and they sent me a letter and copies of the original MSO. Donna was a great help and sent me exactly what I needed. Mine was for the trailer, but she sent both the boat and trailer copy of the orginal MSO. You will need the Hull ID# and trailer VIN.
Yes, they will provide a duplicate with proper request. Georgia is from memory a registration state and does not use the MSO. A signed registration and bill of sale notarized may be all you need to title. People in non title states carelessly loose the MSO and they are title to many states.
BCB is correct. For a used boat, all you should need in Georgia to register is the registration card and bill of sale from the seller. This is definitely true if seller is from GA too, but I believe its the same as out of state sellers as well. for New boats, never registered, you need an MSO. all of that is for the sale/registration by the county/state. Your bank may want something different but not sure why. Word of advice, talk to your tax guy too. If the boat/motor (not including trailer) is over $7,500 the county you live in will hit you for sales tax AND then hit you for advolurem tax each and every year too. Total BS taxing it twice. Im asking my accountant about that myself next week, as i refuse to pay double tax. A lot of guys dont pay the advolurem tax, which youll get a form after a year when the DNR boat registration hits the tax folks.
His bank is saying he needs one, not the state. 1st ive heard of that on a used boat, title release of lien, sure, but MSO for a used boat for the bank…thats a new one for me.
Jslaw, you are correct, its the bank saying they need this? Im not sure if the lady at the bank doesnt understand or if its just something they require? I have Basscat working on it so hopefully it wont be a big issue.
I called the factory yesterday and requested the certificates. Someone was supposed to call me back to help but I havent heard anything. Im sure they have a lot going on but hopefully I can get the certificate soon other wise Im sure he will sell the boat. Hopefully I can become a first time basscat owner quickly.
The person who replicates MSOs was out ill this week.

I know you guys have a lot going on and helping someone with a used boat isnt the top of yourt priority list. I dont mean to be a pain , I am just trying to get this ironed out asap as the gentleman Im buying it from has been holding it for me and Im sure hes tired of waiting. With him being out of state we are having to line up our schedules and he is going to have to take off work to bring it and let my bank inspect it. Thank you for your help, I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully joining the Basscat family.
Donna was awesome and took care of what I needed! Thanks to everyone
