I will be doing this myself. What am I going to expect when removing the factory installed jackplate,as in what was used as a sealant, an epoxy type or just a silicone? Is the plate going to come of or will I have to pry it off? And have a lot of cleanup?

Its a silicone and works to hold well, use small door jam wedges to slide that plate off without damaging the gelcoat. Acrylysolv or another similar chemical from your paint shop will help clean it. We assume you have a 6 bolt BCB plate.

In years gone by, MEK worked well. But this was chemistry-lab quality/strength MEK, not the diluted stuff that paint stores seem to carry thanks to the EPA, OSHA and such. I have also heard that ammonia will clean it up but I have never tried that. Either one requires real care and good ventilation as both are bad to inhale.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

Biggest fear is damaging gelcoat. Give the door shims a shot,good idea!

If you use MEK , do NOT get it on your skin . — Nasty stuff . — Mineral spirits will soften the silicone as well , but Im not sure about what it might do to the gelcoat . —
