Had another charger bite the dust. I have a new 3 bank to install and dont want to go back in the same place. Every time I change these out I have to epoxy over the holes to prevent water intrusion. Every one seems to have different screw positions. Im on #5 in 8 years…Thinking of mounting to the new unit on the bilge seat post with U-bolts. Anybody share what size hardware theyve used that worked well on that seat post?Other thought was to just cut off the ring terminals and add battery clips. Losing a little weight in the back couldnt hurt either after upgrading to grp31 batteries. The chargers would probably last longer if it was used as a 3 battery portable and not bounced around bolted into the bilge. Seems funny that a $50 Schumacher portable can last forever, but a $200 purpose built on-board charger only lasts 2 years….. Maybe bolting it in isnt such a great idea. Put some 1″ tall legs to the bottom and itd charge a lot cooler with more airflow.Just bouncing around ideas – thoughts?
If you are going to use the new on board charger as a portable, dont use clips. Make a harness, with one end attached to the batteries with ring terminals, and the other end to the charger, with a connector in between. Clips are not reliable.
Mr Rick put me on Lester a few years ago and I have not looked back. Carry it in my truck when travelling and store it in locker on my dock. It does not get beat up in rough water. You just plug it in at bow, very easy. Look for earlier threads about it. Do you have 24 or 36 V troller?
Phil – Id love to do the Lester, but I already have this new 3 bank unit. Its a warranty replacement from ProMariner. Catdude – I like the idea of doing a connector, like the ones Noco uses. Have any idea who would make a 6 pin Molex with enough wire gauge to carry the amperage?Last edited by jstew on June 22nd, 2016, 11:15 pm, edited 1 time in total.
How about mounting a new plate by match drilling the existing holes from the old mount. Then mount the new charger to the new plate.New holes would be in the plate not the transom.
Clips have worked fine for me for 7 years now on my minn kota 4 bank?Jeff Id just get a new lester(they are tiny) and a small one bank. Screw that on board charger stuff. On board chargers are made of butt plugs and anal ease and run on a mixture of zima and skittles.Lester chargers are made of rhinocerous horn, Copenhagen, and chubacabra teeth. They run on a mixture of whiskey and water.I would show you a picture of my lester charger but I dont want this thread overrun with half naked dancing girls looking for me.MF lester…….C.O.D. Jr. III
If this is a warranty replacement, AND youre on #5 in 8 years….convert it to portable. Seems like your not having much luck using the mount. I remember reading the clownshoes hasnt used an on board in years just clipped his MK charger. My MK 330 is mounted and going on 10 years in the bilge…which is the only the 2nd charger in 20 years. Pony up for the Lester or keep your new replacement portable. Clips are fine. The next time our charger goes, were going portable as well.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner

But plugs & anal ease? You sure youre not running on whiskey & water yourself Doc? Next thing you know – well discover a Lester is powered with Bruce Lees semen in the diodes and the cables are spun from Lady Godivas hair. I gotta get me one of those….
Yall hadnt seen this one clearly- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w6V_FBQBTLoC.O.D. Jr. III
I prefer the on board. Strictly for the convenience factor.
