My buddy had some weak TM batteries so i loaned him mine for his tournament. He charged them using his Minnkota charger. He gave them back sying they were weak too. I used them the day before and they never went week for me. I put a charge to them and now im getting a blinking red light that says “absorbtion”. I have a tour pro 3000 charger. Did his charger ruin my batteries? Is there anything I can do? Thanks, Kent
Each lead from the charger has + and – leads. All charger leads should be used, + and – hooked to each battery. The charger wont work with one +, and one – lead hooked up.
bank one shows it is charging, bank two shows it is not. there is a place to change the configuration, I am wondering if there is a bridge setting on the charger to allow for charging 24 volts. there is no brand name on the charger but it is model 14780. big grey box mounted in the boat.
Check your fuses in line between the charger and the battery.
what am i looking for? it looks like it is working, and I have power when I troll. the trolling motor is 24 volts
I am looking at the owners manual. this is not right. glad i did not charge for a long time or this would have been bad. so my next question is can i charge the batteries separate even though they are in series?
Most on board chargers are set up to charge individual 12 volt batteries, regardless of their connection to the trolling motor. If you have a two bank charger, there should be four wires from the charger, two positives and two negatives. one positive and one negative should be connected to each individual battery. It does not matter if the batteries are connected in series for 24 volts to the trolling motor. Just connect a positive from bank one to the positive of battery one. Connect the negative of bank one to the negative of battery one, Connect the positive of bank two to the positive of battery two and the negative of bank two to the negative of battery two. There is no need to disconnect the series connections of the batteries because the charger does not see this interconnection for the individual banks.Make sure the two batteries are not totally dead as the on board charger will not respond properly. If this is the case, establish some sort of voltage with an individual charger then try the on board one. To charge individually, just connect the charger to the individual positive and negative of the battery. Do not worry about the interconnection of the batteries. the charger only sees the positive and negative connection of the battery it is connected to.Ensure water is at proper level and all connections are clean and tight.Good Luck and let us know how you make out. thanks for the help. I hooked it up correctly and it looks like it is working now. How hard is it to install a new 3 bank or should I just let the professional do that? also what brand (also the general idea of price for the unit recommended)Last edited by TMAC2 on July 10th, 2010, 3:10 am, edited 1 time in total.
Multi-Stage ChargingWhat is multi-stage charging…and why do I need it? Select Minn Kota chargers offer multi-charging capabilities (bulk, absorption and maintenance/float) to properly charge and maintain batteries. By properly and automatically controlling the current and voltage during the charge cycle, Minn Kota chargers recharge faster while preventing overcharging (which can damage and shorten battery life). With Minn Kota’s multi-stage charging you get back on the water faster and extend the life of your batteries.Bulk — provides high amps at low voltages until the battery reaches ~75% charge.Absorption — when the battery reaches 75% charge, the current begins to taper down until the battery voltage reaches 14.6V.Maintenance (or Float) — when the battery reaches full charge, charge output is dropped to 13.2V – 13.4V (.1A – .3A).
I have a 4 bank MinnKota that has gone bad, the 4th bank fried 2 batteries- at 09 OI my 4th battery went bad, bought one there, this year at OI the 4th battery went bad, got a new one(optimas), GOT HOME CHECKED THRU MY MECHANICS AND FOUND THAT 4TH BANK WAS NOT CUTTING OFF AND FRIED THE BATTERY, ordered a 4 bank from IMPACTFISHING and in the procees of changing out. Sent email to MK about problem, they said send back to them, but sounded like a bad battery- not so, cause has been checked and know the prublem- will have to see what they say after they get it back. Sounds like you might have same problem.SAMBAYOU BANDIT
I replaced a bad TM battery on a 4 bank charger and wander the same thing. Question is – in a series for TM the 3rd battery has the negative lead going to the posittive terminal and vice-versa for the positive. I am checking the charger and it is still showing red/charging after all the others go green. Is that normal? Or is it frying my battery by leaving it plugged in?http://www.vrbo.com/297770
Mine was frying when like that.BAYOU BANDIT

The interconnections of the batteries themselves has no effect on the charger.I am almost thinking that you have the connections reversed and the red light is telling you that…but I cannot be sure by your description.Good Luck
I ran over to the marina after reading the post on frying the battery and unplugged the charger. The other 3 batteries are all green but the one I replaced is red. I hooked it back up exactly as it was when I got the boat. But obviously since I replaced the previous battery (lights were blinking green/red altrernately) because it wass dead as a duck, I have to believe the charging leads are reversed. Is there anyway to check using my multimeter? Also, if they are crossed would the battery still charge? I ask this because the trolling motor is running now whereas it wasnt before changing the battery out.Last edited by RandyTaylor on September 12th, 2010, 10:49 pm, edited 1 time in total.http://www.vrbo.com/297770
Dont complicate the issue more than it is… from each bank of the charger there are two wires, positive and negative, connect each to the individual batteries (positive to positive, negative to negative)…. thats it!If this does not solve you issues, there is something wrong! Please post your findings and results..Good luckLast edited by falcooon1 on September 13th, 2010, 1:37 pm, edited 1 time in total.
