What is the proper procedure for cleaning and waxing the bottom of the boat?
There is not one, and we usually dont recommend cleaning and waxing a hull. They just dont get enough sunlight damage and other issues to require it. If you were to leave it in the water for extended periods, then you might consider this. We just dont think it is necessary. BCB
I think I remember a story from oldtimer where he waxed his hull so well it slid off of the bunks going up a ramp — ouch! If you cant see it, dont worry about it.
Thanks I was hoping that was the answer.
In fact, I remember Tony at the fiberglass shop asking “what in the hell do you have on the bottom of this thing?” (he had turned it upside down to fix the pad and then apply gel-coat). He said “I cant even sit on the thing while I work I slide off…” Best bottom is one sanded with very fine sandpaper where it contacts the water at speed. Only problem this causes is that it will tend to get dirtier since the surface is not glass-like any longer. But it is a tad faster roughed up if you care about speed and dont mind cleaning the bottom every now and then where the green gunk collects after you pull the boat out of the water.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
It breaks up surface tension is seems. BCB
I remember watching some of the “Americas Cup” yacht racing back in the days of Dennis Conner, and one top-secret thing they did was a “wrap” of sorts for their boat that was a copy of the texture of the skin of a shark. They claimed it was worth 2-3 mph on the water, as the turbulence it created tended to break the waters “grip” on the hull. Mother Nature has evolved some marvelous ideas it seems. Now if sharks would evolve with some type of grate over their mouth that only admits fish but not people… BTW, “we dont think it is worth it…” There are no other groups as anal as boat owners it seems. Who has not taken great delight in pulling into a gas station with a spotless boat, been asked by the guy at the next pump, “new boat, taking it out for a break-in?” and you get to respond “nope, boat is 10+ years old, I just take care of it…” That seems to be something that many of us take pride in, even though the things go no faster, nor catch any more fish… Guess it is the same thing that causes you to hardly ever see a Corvette that wont blind you in the sunlight… Last edited by oldtimer57 on March 3rd, 2008, 9:08 pm, edited 1 time in total.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
AMEN OLDTIMER57!!!! Isnt that something?! Lets not underrate it though. I know youre no trying to sound arrogant. haha Its not arrogance, its truth! Not only does it happen at the pump but, it happens at the ramp, on the lake, even going down the highway( This is not for every boat owner so, please, take caution! Only, achieved by dedicated and experienced Cat owners!!!)! Please, dont get offended at us if you pull along side of us and want to commend us on our brand new 10 yr old boat and we just give you a friendly . We already know what your comments or questions are. We are experts at this and are very safety conscious! We would hate to endanger your or others lives!!We are not trying to ignore you nor do we think we are better than you. This just a norm!!! Ive owned a Cat since 94 and it happens alot. Even when I owned my 94 pantera II and it was 10 yrs old, they still wanted to know how I liked my new boat and if it was broken in yet. Id just say “I love it. Heck no, its only 10 yrs old, it aint broke in yet! Yeah, its alot like a Vette. It draws alot of looks and a lil drool from time to time but its when you get behind the wheel that you really get the feel of what sets them apart! Many people yern for them, but feel they are out of their league, and if they took the step of getting in one, theyd become hooked, A CAT JUNKIE! They have a fear of being set apart from the world, ousted from the click! Well, Jesus was ousted and set apart from the world. His word says, ” Be in this world but not of this world.” Im a follower of Christ so, guess what, Im not in the click either!!! Let me let guys who fear taking a step to be a CAT JUNKIE in on a secret! WE HAVE OUR OWN CLICK!!!! LOL Kinda like the sayn “Its jeep thang, you wouldnt understand ( I have a 2000 jeep wrangler w/ a 10″ lift kit that gets the same responses i do as my CAT so i DO understand! )” well, ” ITS A CAT THANG AND YA NEED TO UNDERSTAND!!!! HAHASorry, I went off like that–NOT!haha Just remember, Jesus was the greatest Fisherman and Fisher of Men! Last edited by basscattn94 on March 4th, 2008, 2:02 am, edited 1 time in total.
