Clicking noise from transducer and depth display flashing

Im getting a clicking noise from the back of my boat and I have determined it is from the Lowrance transducer. The clicking stops if I turn off the console unit. Also my depth display seems to flash alot like it cant find the bottom. I have reset the main unit and tried various adjustments with the noise / sensitivity but it doesnt seem to make a difference. Is it a transducer or main unit problem?

Is it a shoot thru the hull or do you have it mounted on the transom (skimmer)? Is this a new install or is it a unit that has worked before and just stopped working?If a new install: If its shoot-thru-hull, it may have air bubbles in the epoxy causing signal loss or could be a location problem. I would think that if its ticking it is sending the sonar pings. If its skimmer on transom, it may be in a bad location that is getting turbulent water causing loss of signal.

It is a shoot thru the hull and it was working. It is the original unit that came with the boat when I bought it in 2005.

Also the depth flashing occurs when the boat is not on plane. Just drifting the depth start flashing.

Im thinking that you may want to check the adhesion of the transducer to your hull if it is starting to come loose then it could cause the effect you are decscribing. The clicking is the transducer and if it were loose it could have a hard time getting a good signal and could also be reflection of the ping into the boat instead of through the hull into the water.irv

I did some checking this morning and it does appear to be a transducer problem. It doesnt feel loose but I can push down on it and the clicking noise changes. What are my chances of knocking this one loose and being able to use it again or should I just plan on getting a new one? The up side to this is I just might replace the whole unit and get something new.

You can knock it loose. I usually use a small chisel and a hammer, making sure Im putting the force on the epoxy “seam” and not the fiberglass. It should pop right up. Depending on how much epoxy is stuck to the transducer, you may be able to sand it down and reuse, though youd want to be sure the transducer is OK beforehand. Im not sure thats a recommended practice but Ive done it before and had no problems. BTW….Ive had the best luck with the Lowrance fast-setting epoxy for my lowrance shoot-thru-hull transducer installs.

I know you mentioned its coming from the back of your boat… But if you have a transducer mounted to the bottom of the trolling motor you will hear it there too. So that is normal. I actually turn off my units when fishing shallow cover up close. It may sound crazy, but if I can hear the clicking, Im sure the fish can too. I cant help you with your unit not being able to find the bottom. Im not sure what that could be. My CatI Am Second

They are correct in that the noise you perceive as a problem is absolutely normal. The signal is sent out through those pulses. You just have not noticed it before. BCB
