On Friday I ran my 04 Cougar 225 Opti up to my buddys tackle shop on Lake Austin. We were going to make 10 mile run to go get some lunch and the Lake was flat and empty of wakeboarders. I wanted to drive his boat so we traded keys. He has a 08 Legend Alpha 21 with Merc 250 Pro xs. We were not actually racing each other, but we were not saving any gas if ya know what I mean. My first impression was that you really can feel that extra 25 ponies in the mid range, and I like the sound of the Merc 250 Pro. As for the boat, I have always thought that Legends are good looking, and well designed boats. It drove really nice, and corners like a Ferrari. It seems like the extra 8 compared to my Coug, would come in handy in really big water. Cannot say anything bad about the boat, but where is all the fun of driving? Basically 73 mph was all I could get out of it, and I could have been eating a sandwich and drinking a coke at the same time. We were running side by side until around the last corner when he got full control of my Cat and was gone. I did everything I could to catch him, but could not. At lunch the raving began, about what a tub his Legend is and how un real fast my Coug is. I guess 75+ is not to common for 04 boats with a 225, news to me He told me the story of him trying to buy a brand new Cat a few years ago, but the dealer ( now out of business ) would not give a younger guy the time of day, so he went and paid cash for a Legend. This is his second one. On Sat I was hosting a Big Bass T on the Lake, and another buddy that has a 21 Champion with a 300 Yami wanted to fish, but his Yami blew up and was still in the shop. You can already guess what happened when he got back, sold …….I do remember some comment like ” Why did you let me take that boat out, I now need to sell a Champion ” I will be tracking the progress, but if they wind up with a couple of 09 Cats from Cliff Brown, maybe I could get a t-shirt out of the deal
