Im having trouble using enough fuel to justify the dual tanks on my cougar. Whats the best way to take one side out of the equation? Im going to pump all the fuel out today as best I can from the right tank. Should I put a little fresh in and run it until the engine runs out of gas? Or will pumping it out be sufficient? Yamaha 250 sho if that makes a difference, dont know how hard it is to restart after running out of gas. I fish a small lake where a ten minute run is about as long as it gets. I run about 20 – 30hrs a year. And even with swapping fuel tanks every couple trips its leaving gas too long in one or the other then leaving it over winter I know your supposed to fill them up completely and that would take me to long use. Yesterday I stared having trouble with old gas in the right one, switched to left and where the gas was newer it ran fine. I want to keep the right one out of service for now but not let it get ruined from ever using again in the process.

Drain the fuel with a siphon. Its fast and simple. Remove the fuel tank sender (This assumes that you can get to the sender). Raise the bow or park on a slope to get the gas into one end of the tank. Use a rigid tube to control where the siphon is picking up. You should be able to get the tank very close to absolutely empty. If you are really anal, you could tie a rag to a stick of some kind and wipe the tanks lowest point.

Siphon it out and treat whats remaining. Use the left tank and use fuel treatment/stabilizer when not in use. I like using fresh fuel, and will go out of my way to get non ethanol gas. When I find good non ethanol gas I use the same location often, to assure quality fuel.It holds up longer and wont attract water like ethanol will. If you run it out you just switch tanks and reprime the fuel line bulb until it gets firm. We have not suggested topping off fuel tanks in several years since ethanol became a factor. Phase separation is a factor today and fuel ages in a few days and definitely a few months today. The change tank to tank for each trip and using a few gallons in each tank is not that much. Just run some fuel additive as it wont matter no more than your running on that small body of water. BCB
