Im sure this has been beat to death, but Im new around here and have devoted a good part of my time here at work every day to Bass Cat research. And I more than likely will continue to do so until one of these boats is in the garage. From what I have gathered the Cougar is lighter, different front deck layout, less cup holders, and no tool holder. I have heard that it is a little faster than the Puma FTD as well. Now I have heard the Puma is the better ridding boat. What am I missing? Is one of these boats better and why?
All things considered equal the Cougar FTD will be a little faster than a Puma FTD and the Puma FTD will be a little better ride. Without owning and driving both you would never be able to tell one from the other. Choose the floor plan that you like best and you wont regret your choice.
The only reason one is better than the other would be your preference to front layout. Cougar FTD has bigger more open boxes. Puma FTD has a net storage that divides the front storage boxes. That net storage adds about 100 lbs to the front. That makes the cougar a mile or two faster WOT but it also sits about 1″ higher in front while fishing. The Puma FTD has built in front running lights. The Cougar has the typical plug in front light. The Puma has a cup holder up front, cougar does not. The cougar has cup holders by the driver seats, puma has cup holders and tool caddy up next to the step to the front deck. Cougar has an ice chest at the step to front, Puma has ice chest and day box in the step to the front. Cougar has a day box in the very front storage compartment. (A day box is a catch all box for what you use during the day. Example: If I find I am catching them on a certain type of worm that day I just keep the package of worms in the day box for easy access) The step of the cougar is more narrow than the puma. Both Puma FTD and Cougar FTD have holders for bouy markers up front.
You can narrow down your choice better by narrowing down what you want.If you like to go faster than fast = CougarIf you like smoother than smooth = PumaIf you carry a mini Bass Pro Shop in your boat = CougarIf you like to organize and compartmentalize your stuff = Puma
Agree with all the above facts and I will add one more. If you use your boat for other things besides fishing, IE taking the kids fishing or tubing. The extra space with the Puma step area is nice for the smaller ones to sit when traveling down the like.Ron
I always hear that the Cougar is faster than the Puma but when I see WOT #s posted the Pumas seem higher. Is it just b/c nobody is tweeking the Cougar to its full potential?
You got to have them cup holders if not you will be spilling beer everywhere.
Gchagler I think whats happening is BCB is now building a Low # of Cougars, where in the Past the FTD was king, the Puma was for the Silver crowd where the Cougar was for the rest, just a opinion. I know that the Cougar FTDs I sold are Frickin Screamers……I remember in 2008 when Ivan had me and then GF in our 1st Bass Boat ride on bull shoals, when he showed me the GPS reading at 70mph, and then said “Hold On” and proceded to Turn the boat in the Champion 1980s style, talk about Wet your Pantys!!!!!
Choose the front deck lay out you want, the Cougar FTD and Puma FTD have the same back end. I chose the Cougar FTD because I wanted the BIG storage compartments and rarely use a net and did not want the smaller boxes in front. I have a friend who had over 50 large plano boxes in an Cougar FTD front compartments no problem!!! I dont carry that many but I could if I want to! My partner can put his fishing bag in the compartment no problem and I can still get to all of my stuff! They both go very fast and ride great! I dont understand why less Cougars are being built, but they seem to be slowly decreasing in sales???? Its a great lay out and fun to drive. The Puma FTD and Eyra seem to be more popular. Whatever you do hang a 250 on the back if you plan to sell it in a couple of years. Good Luck and BASS CAT STRONG!!!
I think the Cougar FTD is the one for me! The front deck storage compartments are the main feature that would sell me. I like a big open box for maximum storage options, and a net storage is not something i will need. Thanks again!
