I am running a 26 trophy on my 04 cougar 250 xs I am still learning how to drive the beast it runs 80+ I run med to heavy load most of the time and am looking for a littlebetter holeshot without loosing too much up top. I have a manual jack plate and havent moved it as it seems to be set properly. Even light I have to feather the gas to keep fromblowing out on take off but when I am heavy I have to be very gentle on the rpms and it takes way too long to break over. This is my first high perf. bass boat and I suspect it is all normal. I was thinking about trying a fury any suggestions???
How long does it ventilate if you leave the throttle down and try to come out at full throttle?BCB
i run a 27 fury on my 03 with XS it does well! I also run a 28 txp 4 blade in cool weahter and if i am alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its BADDDDDDDDDD but the holeshot with 2 people and the wells full leaves a lot to be desired
Call steve at steves custom props. Hes not too far away from you over by lake fork.
I dont know how long it will ventilate, when I hear it slip I always back out Didnt want to break anything. I wonder if I should raise the jack plate a little.I have never felt any torque whatsoever but I am not yet confident over 72 mph when she starts to dance.
We would hold it down for at least two (2) seconds when it ventilates and see if it bites and comes on out.
1 1/2″ below pad sounds very high to me. Most Basscats and Cougars that I have seen are running somewhere from 2 3/4″ to 3 1/2″ below pad. The possible exeption is that of Flyswatter and his SHO yamaha which seem to like higher settings but that was a different boat and motor. I think as you lower the motor it will hold the water better and you will have a better hole shot. From what I read the Fury prop like to run a little deeper and really have very good hole shots. On my Cougar I run a 27 Tempest at 2 3/4″ below the pad and the best holeshot was easily the Tempest. As you lower the engine however you will need to control the chine (not chime) walk better. These boats run high on the pad and need a decent driver to balance the boat or you need more time with this boat to drive and balance the boat on the pad to stop the chine walk. I suggest that you find someone with a higher performance experience to drive with and you will learn much faster. It is true that the boat will chine less with higher engine settings but you will lose bite, have more slip, and more torque on the wheel and probably not be any faster.Irv
Like irv said I would drop the motor holeshot with the fury should be great out of the hole and but has been known to chinwalk on top end. Our boat used to do what you are saying with the slipping coming upout of the hole with anyprop and we droped the motor one bolt and went from a 6 in to a 8 in bobs jack plate and it changed to hole angle of atack on the pad. Drop the motor all the way down had it does not lose bit anymore. Just start trimming motor and plate. But it still wants to be around 3.25 to 3 below pad. And if u like a 4 blade the Bravo 1 xs has been good on both my puma and baycat vary stable compared to the fury on our puma the holeshot and topend go to the fury but vary close
Clarification, motor is running 3.75 inches below pad. I’m not sure where I got the other measurement, but the 3.75 below is what I just measured out. The motor was level on flat concrete surface, so it’s an accurate measurement.Has anyone ran the TXP props? They are a smaller hub prop that will blow out on the hole shot unless all the ports are plugged and the exhaust ring is installed. However, if this is done, the Merc doesnt have enough low end torque to get up on pad (the prop bites too much). To clarify, the TXP prop carries the load very well running, but the hole shot is the main issue, with the WOT trimmed out handling the other. FYI, I’ve already had it up to that “floating” feeling at WOT, so I believe I can handle the boat just fine, I just want to tweak it out a little more.Any ideas in the motor height?
Turbo prop…………..the only boat Ive ever seen that prop was on a center console bay boat. I dont think its a good application for your boat. Theres only two props that I would run on your hull.1. Fury in 26 or 272. Trophy in 25, 26, 27, 28Pitch of prop determined by load you carry. BTW the damaged prop can affect your total performance. In addition, using a Fury has a wide range of misforgivings for height as long as it not too high. Good luck!
