Ive only had my Cougar out a couple of times and I am still learning how to drive it so bear with me…In every other boat that I have driven I have been able to apply full throttle upon take off and get on plane. In my 05 cougar FTD if I hold the throttle down all the way on take off I will lose bite and just start spinning my prop untill I let off a little. This is with the trim all the way down. I have a 25p Trophy and a Bobs 6″. Is it normal for these boats that I would have to “feather foot” the throttle on my hole shot? Do I need to adjust my engine height?I also noticed that my top end was only about 62mph at 5700 smartcraft rpms (I still had a lot left but I didnt want to rev too high.) This seems awefully low compared to everyone else. Thanks for the help.
probably gonna need to know what motor and wether the prop has vent holes and what is currently in it for plugs or vents to help out.
What engine are you running? That sounds way off!!. I usually start my holeshot at a fast idle but not sure I ever had a prop blow-out or ever had to feather the throttle. is your prop in good shape? If it as 225 opti then you are very close to you rev limitter at 5700 rpms and should be seeing right at about 70ish with that prop. I run the 25 pitch Trophy plus as well.
Engine is a 2005 225 proXsengine height is approximately 25&1/2″prop is in great shape and It appears to have 4 vent holes 2 appear plugged and two arent.
For one, sounds like you need to go up in pitch to a 26 Trophy. That should bring your rpms down a little and your top end up a little. As for your hole shot problem. You need to play around with those plugs until you find the best hole shot. I would try unplugging the 2 that are plugged and see what happens. They make those plugs solid and with a couple different size holes on them. Will just have to play with them a little bit until you find what it is you are looking for. Can also try putting a blow out ring around the prop and that might help a little bit also. Good Luck
We suggest you have someone set up your rig that is familiar with the combination and see what the max performance and RPMs are.
you can add some more plgs to the other holes to help with the blowout. if you are in south La give me a shout and me and gunrunner xcan get you fixed up. I like a fury on the cats myslef
Yep. Let us know where you are. Im in central tx and would be glad to help. These guys on the forum will get you set up and fast. Also, theres only one way to learn to drive…..try to get some one to go with you to help with the “learning curve gas bill”!!
Geography is not on my side… I live in Minneapolis, MN and there are only a few guys up here running Bass Cats. There arent even a whole lot of performance bass boats at least not in my network. I will try playing with the vent plugs. The slow take off I can live with but I would assume the trade off for that would be a higher top end but my top end isnt good either. I dont totally trust my tach even though it is smartcraft MercMonitor becuase it just seems like there is so much throttle left to give it at 5700. Im wondering if im getting a bad read from the computer? Are most of you guys able to get to that high of RPMs without trimming very high and still have a lot of throttle left to give??Thanks for the suggestions and offers to help.KentLast edited by kent7351 on May 10th, 2010, 1:50 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Hi Kent, I guess you would live in my district (lol) Give me a shout, I dont live to far from the twin cities and would be glad to help you out. I will be away from my computer the rest of the day so if you can PM Doug McGee and he can get you my cell Phone # as well.
