I just noticed on my 06 Puma today that the clear hand rail tubes are showing cracks on the driver and passenger side. Some are almost 1 inch in length and as deep as 3/8″. I dont push my boat in rough water so Im kind of concerned about this. Will these cracks eventually go right through and can the hand rails be easily replaced? I can put up a couple of pics if needed. If you cant convince them, confuse them.
Email or send pictures to BassCat on Monday, would be the best bet. ] . Then go from there…good luck.96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
BCB in the past have replaced these free of charge. Mine on my 2006 Puma did the same thing. There were a batch of rails that were prone to these cracks. I am sure they will get you fixed up.
It will depend on a 2006, as they are well outside a 2 year warranty. The rails are prone to substances causing the issues and water with soap will not. You can check through your original dealership or contact Service for more help. BCB
Thanks for the replies. Ill check with the dealer on Monday and see what they have to say.If you cant convince them, confuse them.
Replacing now five year old plastic parts? Talk about going above and beyond, especially as many times as I see these being used as tie ups at docks. I dont know you alls specific cases but the lack of all the plastic on dashes and switch panels is one thing that drew me to Cat. If you want those fancy lighted hand rails I just cant imagine they wouldnt weather, craze, etc… heck Id even use them to heft myself in and out of the boat if I had them. Good luck, I cant imagine any small part on a Cat being that high dollar.
Actually JohnM17 BCB took the original first cuts of the rails and stored them on top of the building for five (5) years to check the weathering. They actually forgot about the rails for a while, then recalled them being there in a conversation over the weathering. Those parts actually were out for the full term of five years in 100 degree sunshine, sub zero weather, hail, rain, the Big Ice Storm and all. You may recall a picture being posted on this site of one of the cut outs. They pulled the cuts down and they removed the junk from no maintenance with soap and water. Then they checked the parts for damage. They actual acrylic rails were pristine for their age. They did a lot of research early on in the spectrum and they found that silicone was tedious on the acrylic rails. There were a lot of products that in 2005 were used for the install that were taboo on the life cycle. After early 2005 Model Year (2004) they ended anything getting close to the rails other than soap and water or petroleum jelly. Which is those who tour the factory, or in production images, will now notice lots of small Windex spray bottles labeled water. We found that image and linked it up here. The actual cause of the issues were determined to be chemical related. Who knows what or how, though it is chemical related on the troubles.
My boat is stored indoors unless Im out fishing and the only cleaner I have ever used is either a wet towel with water after coming off the lake or bass boat saver. The last 2 years I have had the boat out less than 20 times due to not enough time to get out Is it a easy install to do myself is what I would like to know. Just seeing it bothers me and want to fix it”)If you cant convince them, confuse them.
I replaced my rails this spring. BCB did work with me even though they were way out of warranty. Now the new port rails are just starting to show the crazing and starbord side is fine I only use mild soap and water to clean them. Could it be the oil in my passangers ( my son) hands as they will use as hand hold?
It is hard to say what is the cause.
