Ive looked in the FAQ section and cant find what Im looking for. I am going to have to replace my cranking battery in the Caracal and do it tomorrow or Tuesday. (Heading to Georgia Wed morning.) I checked my cranking battery just now, its at 12.1 both on the Merc monitor and on my battery tester. I currently have an Interstate in it that is 3 years old. What Walmart Everstart meets the cranking requirements? Also what Deka meets those requirements? Locally those are the only brands I trust, that I can get locally. Id go up to Sherms tomorrow to get one, but its supposed to snow here.
We would always suggest on a Premium model that the 31 series AGM be in dash. Not a spiral cell round 6 pack, a full 31 case battery. There are several brands that will serve the purpose. The heavier the battery, the better the power is a good standard.
Lots of places between you and Georgia. Back before winter (october) i purchased a 31agm northstar. I didnt even need one. My buddy has a great connection on batteries. He was needing some and said ” you better get while the price is good”. I will note i been out 10 or 12 times(daylight till dark running my livewells and my hds12 and 9)and have been well pleased. It is a hoss of a battery. The deka (would be my next choice. Though ive read only good about the walley world and oreily batterys. As far as the wally world battery(there is one justy about everywhere if you have issues)
None of the Walmart Everstarts meet the crank requirements for an Opti and accessories. Their largest one, a 29 series (which is the same size and capacity as a 31 series) is a deep cycle battery, and wont work for cranking. It is good for the troller, and very popular. You need at least 950 ccas to allow for engine and accessories. If you want a flooded Deka, then your best bet is a commercial 31 series. It was actually Sherm who introduced me to the idea of a commercial/truck battery for cranking a few years ago. The commercial Dekas would be the 1231 or 1131, both of which would work, with the former a little stronger. You can buy the 1131 re-labelled at Sams Club for 99 dollars. It is also re-labelled for Batteries Plus, OReillys, and Advance Auto Parts. Although it sounds like you want stay away from Interstate, but, it is the 31 XHD for their flooded commercial 31 series battery. If you want AGM, then you have lots of choices. The Northstar/Batteries PlusX2 and Odyssey are both beasts but require a really good charger. Not all AGM chargers will work properly with those two. If you have the MK PC that BCB now uses, you would be fine with any AGM.
Catdude i knew you would be along! You helped me alot when i bought my northstar. I did buy a dual pro delta volt single bank. Which i mounted on the wall of my shop. Thanks for the clarification on the wally world batteries for crankers
Thanks for the info everyone. I just talked to Sherm, he said the battery needs to be load tested. So after much thought, being one who doesnt look for physical labor, Im going to drag the boat up to Sherms tomorrow, in the rain, and have him check it out for me. That way, I know for certain, that if it needs to be replaced, Ill have the correct battery. Ah the things we do to be sure our BassCats are in good working order! :lol And yes, I did say rain, weve got 2″ of snow on the ground from last night…tomorrow…thunderstorms! :lol Indiana at its finest!
Red, that is a great set up that should do you for years. Bill, let us know what crank battery you wind up with.
Just got back from Sherms. He put a 31MHD Interstate in it. The other battery, under load, went down to 8 volts! So at least I shouldnt have battery problems for a while. Trolling motor batteries tested fine.
For the battery guys out there, other than price, what would be the advantage or disadvantage of using the 31MHD Interstate battery compared to using the 31M-AGM Interstate battery? I’m on the hunt as well for a better starting battery that will support my electronics. Thanks….
Cost…
