Cranking Battery Issues

I have a 2007 Pantera IV and i am on my third cranking battery. The latest one is a 1100 cranking amp and it died during a one-day tourney. I have heard talk about the gel batteries, but was curious what my fellow BassCaters had to say. Okie

Maybe your battery charger is “cooking” them. Sounds to me like you may have an issue with a charger or youre allowing the battery to sit dead for several days at a time. As far as gel cels, Rick P. had some advice a couple of weeks ago. I think he preferred an AGM battery. Do a search on “battery” and youll probably find the answer to what youre looking for. I use my boat on the weekend tourney and i dont charge the batteries until the day before i plan on fishing again. is this maybe causing me problems? should i charge them right away so they sit with a charge?

Letting them sit all week discharged is killing your batteries…chargeem up as soon as you get back and then freshen them up the nite before. Judd Lasiter

Thanks Judd for the response. Only question now is if the cranking battery i have in now that died this weekend, is it salvageable? or did i kill it?

As Judd said it is very important with the deep cycle batteries to get them charged up as soon as you can after a day of fishing. The go ahead and unplug them. The night before the event plug them back up and you should be good. Also during the summer time if you boat is kept outside, you have to give special attention to the water levels in those batteries, more so then if stored in the garage.

The batteries sulfate the plates and they tend to build up more if not charged ASAP. You can try a hard charge to cook the plates, which knocks the sulfate off. This requires a god higher amp transformer charger. Though they are probably toasty.
