I was out on the river Friday and when I got ready to crank the big motor (200EFI) the battery was dead. I hooked up a trolling battery and cranked the motor. Then I removed the cables while the engine was running and hooked them back up to the dead battery and the engine died instantly. I then hooked back up to the trolling battery and fished the rest of the evening and replaced the cranking battery Saturday. I new I was going to need a new cranking battery since it was the original in my 2005 Classic. My question is did I mess up by disconnecting the battery while the engine was running? How would I know? As always any help in fixing my screw ups is greatly appreciated!!!!Jon

There is a small chance you could damage it removing the cables with the engine running. The newer engines require a battery to keep the system operating, no matter the alternator. Not always is everything new better in all aspects. We ran a many an engine and vehicle without a battery years back. It was simple when you dropped a battery to just run them home. We also ran them without an alternator, though those days have ended. BCB

You have to be careful doing that. The voltage regulator senses battery voltage and charges accordingly. When you run the engine without the battery connected, the voltage regulator will sense the low voltage and go to max output. It is possible to over drive the regulator and damage it. Same is possible on your car. BCB says the newer engines wont run without the battery connected. That may be true.
