Cross Country Pre-Spawn Fishing

As it stands right now, I am getting ready to PCS from Virginia to California being without a job between the end of February and the end of March when I have to report back in. With that being said, since I have to make the cross country trek anyways I plan on fishing the prespawn/spawn in about every lake I can hit for at least a day between here and California. Of course there is going to be the obligatory stop in Mountain Home after leaving my sisters in Kentucky. With that being said, what/when/where are the best places I should plan to hit? Say I want to be in Arizona by 8 March for my little girls 5th birthday, and am leaving Virginia on 25 February. If I only get a day or so on a given lake I want to make sure it is very much so worth it. Any thoughts or input will be greatly appreciated.- Chaz

swing south to Falcon. weather will be warm and you might catch a double digit. fork is another lake that would be high on the list for a big one!

Tell your sister in KY she can come see YOU. Id drive south and goto Guntersville and Pickwick. Then Id head to Mtn Home and try Bull Shoals and then onto Arizona as needed.C.O.D. Jr. III

If you come near Yuma Az, Id stop on the Colorado River/Lake Martinez area that time of year.

Phil, I was thinking Texas anyways. However, I sold all my assault rifles in the last few years so I am not too sure about Falcon. How is Amistad then?I also have a friend of mine who just retired to Southern Mo. Maybe Guntersville, Fork, Amistad or O.H. Ivie, then to Phx. Mike, I will definitely be too far north for that. Fork, Choke Canyon, Falcon or Amistad,,,,,,,then quit and go to Arizona. After seeing all them its all downhill.

Ok, to get to mountain home from Lexington one would HAVE to cross Ky Lake, what is late Feb like there?- Chaz

I would ditto what was said about Arizona. On the Colorado system, Lake Martinez and Ferguson…. fish those reeds. Get out early, and knock off early. Put in at Fishermans Landing. Its all about flipping the shade, and hotter it gets, be near moving water…. The ticket is sprayed grass sweet beavers, flipping 25lb mono. It slides through the reeds better and they hit it better than braid. In California if its SoCal hit Castaic or Casitas both turn out record fish. Fishing swim baits in trout pattern in either on flurocarbon. These are both very clear bodies of water. If you see fish busting the top, it can be either stripers or LM. Try a 4inch basstrix flashtrix in smelt pattern or clear with a black back. Rig it on a 1/8ounce weighted hook, and 20lb braid. You want to fish it wake style, with only the bait remaining in the water and nice V as youre retriving it. Its money. Take your jigs too in natural colors. You will likely need to dropshot any bedding fish. Try dropshotting a small worm on light line as long as you have enough open water to fight the fish. Search around enough and you should find some bedding fish in both areas.
