why the preference for passenger radials versus trailer tires ? tire shop guy is trying to steer me toward tires designed specifically for trailers, but i told him the trailer manufacturer was pretty adamant about using passenger radials. can you share some insight with someone who knows absolutely nothing about tires?
Thats quite the coincidence that you posted that because i just got off the phone an hour ago with Discount tire and even after i told him that the manufacturer puts them on he still told me that they will NOT put them on a boat trailer and was trying to get me to put on a trailer tire. I called another Discount tire shop and they had no problem putting them on as he knew that there were many bass boats that had came through the shop and they would get them put on. Dropping the rims off tonight to have new tires put on. Guess it just depends on who you talk to.

One of my cooper tires blew up when only two year old. After reading past post on problems with them during a certain time I just changed all my tires.I put on trailer tires and personally I cant tell much difference in tow or handling. They do seem to be able to hold air pressure better though. Ive had them for about 9 months and have yet had to add any air.Last edited by 1958 on April 8th, 2013, 9:07 pm, edited 1 time in total.
I beIs e basscat said the passenger tires were a load rated tire and the trailer tires were not. I believe that topic is in the fact section
Its a touchy subject, though the tire manufacturers would not allow you to put trailer tires on your car. They have no issue with passenger tires on your boat so one can assume easily they have more confidence in the passenger car tires.
I know nothing about tires but this link tells pretty much the same as how it was explained to me and why I went with trailer tires.http://www.bassboatmagazine.com/trailer … c811449e59&
First of all I like that theres a BassCat on the top of the page for the magazine where this was published…..It all comes down to this-If one trusts that BCB tracks and is honest about their data then its hard to argue with their approach. They know THEIR product well. They make the trailers, they make the boats, they do the warranty work and take the phone calls when it all goes to cat scat.I am hardly the guy covered in BCB patches but you gotta bow to experience.Plus trailer tires are just ugly. They are. They look like someone took my kids tricycle tires, made em bigger, and sold them to you for your boat.C.O.D. Jr. III
Thats true what you say ward. Didnt mean to come off as argueing approach or trying to convince anyone – just saying when I bought mine thats pretty much what was told me so I went with it. At the time I wasnt aware BCB recommended passenger tires. I know nothing about tires and cant really tell the difference…. and I agree they dont look as good.
Me either-You also gotta figure when trailer tires are the standard by which everything is measured then they must be better by theory and/or actuality.I figure for overall trailer use they are better across the spectrum of all trailers out there with all loads and all wear uses.I figure for these boats with these trailers they dont matter. Dont blame the tire guys cajun is dealing with as they just dont have specific experience to this application- Talked to a patient the other day that sells tires here in Arkansas about this- said he wouldnt use passenger tires. His reasons were that he wanted to run tires forever despite cracks everywhere in the tires and that they wouldnt blow out given sidewall design as passengers would be more likelyto do such.I am going to change tires likely every 3 years, arent gonna run them cracked, and like looks over the risk of blowout for now.Last edited by clownshoes on April 9th, 2013, 12:29 am, edited 1 time in total.C.O.D.
