Im looking to upgrading from my 92 PII too a newer Puma. Identical Pumas other than color, motors and electronics. Im torn between the motors, a 13 250 SHO w/96 hrs or the a 250 Pro XS w/375 hrs. I lean a little more towards the SHO.Looking some unbiased options on the motors from people who are familiar with BOTH motors?

I am familiar with the SHO only, however, I have a friend that fishes a lot!!! And competitively, he repowered with a SHO a couple of years ago from a Pro XS. He had no complaints with the XS. He has had no complaints with the SHO. He did say however, he has saved an absolute ton in oil money. My SHO pushes my loaded Jag 74.9.Britt
The Pro XS is going to be a hair faster, though has almost 280 more hours. Gassbasser has an excellent point on SHO oil and the Pro XS burns about 1.5 gallons an hour less at full throttle. That becomes a wash. 1.>Condition of the rigs would make our determination list. 2.>Equipment has to come into play somewhere different. Poles, Grab Pole, Wheel/Tire, Electronics, Cover, Jack Plates and Etc.3.>Warranty on the outboards would be the largest determining factor. They both can go poof. BCB
The SHO gets my vote. I have a 250 SHO on my Eyra and have not been passed by a Mercury yet. (Not saying that it wont happen but they better be doing over 82+) Another thing that you do not hear a lot about is hole shot with a SHO…..I have a couple friends that have to play with props, vents, jack plates and have to settle on a great hole shot or top end with a Merc. You can also find thousands of threads about this but very few where it concerns a SHO. With the SHO I just threw the ventless prop on and 3-4 second holeshot and great top end. I did change props because I was hitting the limiter. The torque of the 4.2 liter SHO is incredible. The 2013 powerhead and up have been pretty stabile after some mods from Yamaha, in their first couple years they went through some powerheads. The XS is also being discontinued in the near future so that could hurt when it comes time to sale the boat. Just a couple extra things to throw in the decision making process.
I am always amazed at the insight that Bass Cat throws at us on questions like this. They make me think about things I probably would have glossed over. These are things we should be thinking about but sometimes over look due to trying to take in so much.Britt
Ill add to what BCB noted, what does your local dealer or repair shop that YOU trust specialize in? If its Mercury, service on the SHO could be an issue and vice versa. Having access to good mechanics who are factory trained and keep up with their training is extremely important. Something to keep in mind.

Thank you all for your input, it came down to going to look at the closest to me. One was 4 hours away and the other was 13 hrs away, plus about $6000 difference in price which was due to mostly taxes from being a dealer. The super nice individual even took me for a short ride in it and the Pro XS sure felt strong. The boat looked much better in person than the pictures and was in great shape!
I say merccuz its closer to ya
