OK guys. I have one more question. I am ordering the Detwiler 8 inch hydraulic jackplate. Is the Exacto-gauge more reliable than it used to be? If any of you guys use the exacto-gauge on the Detwiler hydraulic, are you pleased with it and has it been reliable. I used the exacto-gauge on several of my past Tritons, but they were not very reliable at that time. I am hoping that they have improved. I have been told that the Detwiler hydraulic plate has been very much improved over the past several years. Please provide your thoughts and feedback. Corky
I did not mention in the above post that the plate will go on an 09 Puma FTD with a 250 Mercury Pro XS and 26 Fury Prop. Thanks again for any feedback.
Corky Ive never had the first problem with one and Ive had one on my last 8-10 boats. I didnt know though that BCB offered one these days.
I have a gauge on mine that quit working. In time you will develop a feel for it. I just trim it up enough to free the boat and find the pad, then adjust the engine height to give me a touch of Prop torque. If its trying to walk on me, it means the engine is too low, it there is a handful of steering torque, I go down with the engine. The feel varies with the load, so to say I have one setting that is perfect is not correct in my boat. I run it slightly different every time out. I see the dial as something else that might eventually need to be fixed. I have found that running at medium speeds (40-60), I can adjust the engine height to eliminate prop torque. Its like the engine has power steering. However, if you go full throttle in this position, it will dance quite a bit, thus, I will move it up some to feel a touch of prop torque and the walking is gone- 75 mph on a rail. ( I run a 225 ProXS). BTW, My engine likes the Fury run lower in the water than my worked Trophy. Also, my boats planes faster with the engine higher than I usually run it. As Im trimming the boat out, Im usually moving the motor down a bit. I do love the adjustability of the hydro plate and I think it gives me a spare 1-2 mph, but many will tell you that they are not needed to make these boats perform really well.
Corky, I bought Phils 08 boat and I have come to love the exacto-gauge. With that being said it did flake on me this weekend. I had the motor jacked uo all the way while i was in a stump filled creek and when i left there i went to lower the motor back down and it didnt move. I twisted it back up and then when i twisted it back down it moved. I guess it was a fluke but I dont know if that is a warning sign it is getting ready to go out or what.
We have offered them, though do not suggest them for many reasons.
This is what ive been exposed to , and have been impressed with the ease of control, and the assisted learning curve. Some like the blinker style and guage better, but IF i were using a hyd. plate, i think i would follow P.A.s lead. Ive driven both, and the dial made it easier, and reduces overmanipulation of the plate by the user. Hydraulic All-In-One Jack Plate Control System and Switch Options , || Ex-Zact Dial System- OEZ Dash- mounted hydraulic jack plate adjustment Returns plate to within 1/8″ of desired location every time Eliminates need to visually reference engine position Part numbers- OEZ600/OEZ800, || AGAIN, BCB will rig a Hydraulic jackplate on the boat of your choice, but in most cases does not reccommend them.
ATTA BOY DOUG………VERY NICE JOB
