Is it possible to install a drain plug that hangs in the drain hole and either screws in or suctions in? I was hoping to find a drain plug that is similar to what is currently used that has a flange that could just hang in the hole.Any feedback is appreciated.
No, A special tool is used to crimp the ends in the fiberglass. Have to Dremmel off one end supposedly the inside, then you can add the new stainless screw in plug with a little widening of the hole and some fiberglass.. Instead I used a bolt through the insert and some heavy fender washers on both sides to recrimp the insert. Tried tp get a little silicone around the insert before crimping. Working fine as of now 08 Puma.
You can recrimp it with a bolt set as described, and tighten it. The sealing is critical and often when they loosen it is from battery gasses eating the sealer or the tube itself. Replacement is best. BCB
Will the tightening of the drain plug with the bolt set reseal, mine has been loose from the day I owned the boat 08 Puma. The drain plug insert is in good shape. Ordered the new screw in drain plug but thought it might take a professional to install. Is the reseal more critical for water intrusion into the back of the boat or transom. I live several hours from any Bass Cat Dealer. Thanks in advance
tschooler1956, You can insert the new drain easily, just make sure the area around the insert is sealed well. It is not that difficult, though enlarging the input hole is the hardest part. This would be fine since you have the new drain part. We go both ways on the new verses the old drain assembly. We really like the large 1″ smooth drain tube as things slide out easily that get trapped in the bilge, and we really like the ease of the stainless insert and the fact that a plug is always handy. Got the old drain plug out. Will be ordering new stainless steel insert with plug from parts. Thanks for all the info.
How did you get it out? And how are you going to crimp it back? ThanksLast edited by tschooler1956 on December 10th, 2009, 2:03 am, edited 1 time in total.
Just took screwdriver rolled the outside flange in then slipped the washer off. The whole drain then pushed to the inside.
Thats the way its done! BCB
Will the new drain plug fit a 2001 Pantera Classic? If so how much to they go for, I could not find it on the website.God Bless, Stephen
Sometimes there are small pieces of glass or other debris that can wash back into the threads and make it difficult. What I do when I pick up my boat – Steve Eastwald showed me this trick – is back it in with plug open and take on just a little water and pull out. It washes whatever may be in that area out. When/if plug is stuck, I will take a pair of needle nose pliers and put a cloth or towel on the metal plug and work it back and forth just a little until the plug breaks loose. Hope this helps.
This is a full sleeve and not threaded we believe. The sleeves are crimped in and should be hard set. You should not be bake to remove the sleeve unless it is faulty.
call parts and get the drain plug used on the FTD models.
We only suggest that install be done by qualified fiberglass shops as the removed plug has to be sealed. We really like the old style, though people like the new style.
Tackle Warehouse has a drain plug that you can engage and disengage from the console. It just so happens that it is on sale for today only. I have not used this product myself. I do not know what it would take to install. I just know that they offer this product for sell on their website. You can access it also by looking under their marine tab on the website.
