Topic: Dry compartment all wet?

2016 Caracal, fished in some serious heavy rain Friday! My dry box on the floor next to cooler filled completely full of water. No drain hole in there, any ideas as to what allowed water in? It has the rubber gasket seal to keep water out but didnt work. What would cause this and how to fix? My co anglers phone is now toast. Thanks in advance, Murph.

Sorry about the co-anglers phone. We are not familiar with the box layout on a Caracal you mention ourselves though we will prompt this for the next moderator to answer. There are numerous ways that water enters a compartment and it can come from unsealed mounts to holes that are not sealed and install errors. We believe this is a small glove box on the side, back of rod box, with a draw latch. We ourselves dont know the backside construction exactly and would prefer another moderator answer.

You are correct that it is below rod locker with the latch system to keep closed. Will keep checking back, thanks.

Ive now lost two phones in that same box. First time thought I had left the latch unlocked and my fault. Second time, know it was closed and latched for sure. Can not figure out how the water is entering it yet. Just have learned to keep valuables out of it.

Ive noticed on my caracal that most compartments end up wet, in the rain or even when one comes over the bow when on the trolling motor. Not sure if its the way its laid out or what. My 08 PII never leaked, fished 3 days in heavy rain once and not one compartment was wet.

That much water is probably from rivet and screws mounted in the hinges. The latches do leak some on all models, though not a tremendous amount.

The biggest problem I have found is that my son finds a reason to open most every box/locker on the boat when in the middle of a frog-choker. Has rain gear in one, puts his sunglasses up in another, you get the drill. If you open em, rain gets in. My classic seems to stay totally dry so long as the boxes are not opened in the middle of the flood. Sometimes I hear the rain coming, other times I see it up or down river. Son always waits until the last minute. I do let him deal with the shop vac. 2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
