Hi, I have always owned single axle trailers and have found them easy to pull and easy to push around manually in the garage. I am looking at upgrading and all the boats I am looking at have dual axles. Are they harder to pull and less easy to manuver manually? Jeff
From my experience the dual axle is easier to tow and with BassCats pop axle option, you can maneuver it just like you would a single axle. All of my boats going forward will be a dual axle.Jason Desertdweller.com Get Your Bass in the Boat!
Easier and safer on the highway, especially for a long pull. VERY difficult to maneuver by hand and more difficult in a tight spot. I have to approach my garage opening at a slight angle and a slight incline. I couldnt do it by hand. I do have a pop axle but can get the boat in far enough with the vehicle to not have to use it.
Tandems are safer than a Single Axle, though they are not as fuel efficient. If you are looking at a smaller boat, then a single axle would be fine. Though on larger loads there is no option other than the tandem. BCB
I have had both tandems and single axle. Heres how I see it. I like single axle trailers. To me, theyre much easier on the tow vehicle to pull, but Im typically not on the interstate highway. They are easier to turn with the vehicle, easier to turn by hand, and essentially have half the mantienence, as youve only got 2 tires instead of 4, 2 bearings instead of four, etc. Tandems look better and haul heavier loads. Tandems are better on long trips. Tandems are rough on tires…..as any time theyre in a tight spot, and youre turning, it sounds like youre grinding the rubber off of the tires (which you are). I prefer the single axle, but my boat wants dictate I have to have the tandem. Dang Jag!
Ive had both tandems and single axles. While everyone is right, a single is easier to manuever and you have only two tires and wheels to worry about, I wouldnt ever want a single again, even if I had a smaller boat, like a Sabre, etc. The tandem, to me, tows easier, (it doesnt sway hardly at all). It is safer, if you have a blow out, youve still got a tire on the road to help you limp someplace to get the bad tire fixed. Plus it provides more support for the boat, no matter what the size of your boat.
Ive also had a single axle and a tandem trailer. The single axle trailer was another boat brand, and I had lots of problems with trailer sway while driving especially at higher speeds. I love the tandem trailer. It feels very smooth and it pulls straight and true. I do like the safety factors of the tandem trailers, and I agree that they look better also. If moving the trailer by hand, the pop axle feature or Go Jacks would help with tandem trailers. I rarely have to move my trailer by hand, so the tandem trailer fits all my needs. Hello Guys, some of you know that I am a dealer for BCB, so I felt I would give my “loved”, When we go to the boat shows around Wisconsin often I am alone in tweaking the booth and making sure the boats look great…Last year we had our Demo Cougar ftd, Pantera 2 and Sabre FTD all on Tandems at the show…..Now I am a larger than normal guy, 6ft 5, 265lbs, but still I moved even the Cougar FTD around the booth, some times I had to bump the front side to side, but if you need alot of movement for a garage my guys with “clean” concrete floors simply put cardboard under the tires and slide it around……Ive sold only 1 boat with a Single axle, Sabre FTD and it towed wonderfully and safely….This year Im not ordering my Sabres with Tandem, simply because of price increases……Though the Sabre FTD looks mean as hell on a tandem……Happy New Year All…..Your Signature …
Thank you all for the feedback. I learned a lot. I am not familiar with a pop axle. I assume it is a mechanism that raises one axle up and lifts the tires. If that is the case, it would be a great option. Thanks again for your feedback. Jeff
The POP axle is unable to be bolted on in 2009 and will have to be new equipment only. There is a bolt on kit for pre-2009 models. BCB
