I want some info on the dual pro xtraII charge on the run charger. I have a 15 amp per bank dual pro 3 bank charger, servicing a 36 volt trolling motor system with 3 batteries. The battery that is also the starting battery gets recharged on the run from the outboard. If I added a Pro XTRAII would I need 2 of them, one for each of the other batteries or is only one needed? Im not sure how the batteries are wired to get the 36 volts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
I would suggest you go to the dual pro site and email them or call. I have one on my boat a 1998 PII running 3 batteries 1starter and 2 TM but only now 24v Trolling Motor vs the Brute 24v/36v it use to have. I installed the unit after changing to a 24V Tour Ed 82lb MG the II model unit has 3 sets of leads, one goes to the starting battery and when it is fully charged then it reverts the outboard charging system to the two trolling motor batteries. there is two lights on the top of the unit that tell you which batteries are being charged starting or trollings.. My boat is set up with a Dual Pro Pro Series 3 Bank 15 amp charger a dual pro remote charge indcator and the Dual Pro Extra II run as you charge system. I believe what you want is a Dual Pro Extra III to charge three TM batteries, If I am reading your post correctly you have 4 Batteries in your boat one starter and 3 TM. If you email them make sure you define how many batteries are in your boat first. then what they are for example 4 battery sys. 1 starter 3 for 36V TM or 3 Battery system 1starter and shared with 2 TM batteries for 36V TM
I have 3 batteries set up like yours. My starting battery I assume is charged while running with the outboard, and the other 2 get no other charging through out the day. I see on dual pro web site there is a I, II, and III I think I only need the II because I will only be charging 2 batteries while running with the unit. I have tried to call but got no answer yet. So then how do you like this set up? I had a stealth in a P4 I used to have and do miss the charge on the run feature. Do you think this set up is worth it? Thanks
jhva – I have no experience w/ the Dual Pro Xtra system but just to give you more options MinnKota has released similar technology. Read about it here: http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/ … p?pg=mk2dc I have seriously thought about running one of these next year. Judd Lasiter
I am not sure with your system because you are sharing the starting battery with the others.. I believe it would work just like mine and I agree that you are charging you starter battery when running but the other two TM batteries are not being charged. If I had it to do over (Gee I guess I could but dont want to spend the money again lol ) I would of went to a 4 battery system and a 101LB 36V TM the 82lb was the strongest 24V.. I live in Michigan and fish the Det River and the St Clair River in current all day and I mean all day on Hi. with the 82. I have two major UPS type High Deep Cycle AGM Batteries for the TM motor and I think the system helps but remember it easier for me because when I run my starter battery get fully charged quicker, you will be using your starter battery for TM also and it may take longer to recharge before the system reverts the charge to the other batteries. Sorry to hear you couldnt get Dual Pro on the phone, when I set up they were very helpful and we talked for some time. Again the system doe not charge the TM batteries until the starter battery becomes fully charged I think it works off of volts 13.2 than it will revert. All and all I love the system. I really like the remote Indicator, especially when out of town a quick look under the cover and I know that the charger is still powered, nothing like coming out in the morning and finding someone knocked your extention cord out of the place tripped a breaker. That day I would have to run a lot… lol lol
I can tell you I talked to Charging Systems about using a xtraII system on 3 batt 36v set up and they told me NO…I dont remember now what all the issues were but it works on a 24v system fine but not on 36v…. As for my experience on the Detroit R. I have ran both 82s & 109s on there and a 109 does no better in the current than a 82 does….So I stick with the 82s…..my .02 worth…….Sherm
Well now we have conflicting answers. Dual Pro just told me that the pro xrta II would work fine for this system, and Sherm says they told him it wouldnt. Now what do we do?
I would talk to Dual Pro again, I reviewed the X II on there site and read the description, I installed mine two seasons ago and my unit has a wire that needs to be run to the Ing Switch. The unit now does not need this, I guess what I am saying is Sherm and Dual Pro may both be correct. Maybe this new level unit will work. Its all about timing and new technologies
There is more info now. Jones trolling motor has told me it would also work. Theoretically I am only charging 2 batteries. The starting, third trolling battery is being charged already from the outboard alternator. I would simply be adding 2 more batteries to the system. So the PX2 would be the proper choice.
No matter what they say the thing you need to remember is >>>>>>> It will not charge the two other TM batteries until the starter battery is fully charged.. If I were you and going to do this using a 36 V 3 Battery system I would revert all other wires to one of the two trolling motor batteries in other words. livewell and GPS directly to TM battery 2. Battery 1 would be for starter and TM 36V Battery 2 would be for TM, Livewell and GPS and battery 3 for TM. This will allow battery 1 to fully charge faster that then let it flow to battery 2 and 3. Most would say not to put GPS lines to TM batteries but with your set up you have it that way already using the starter battery now for starter, livewell, GPS and TM at 36V. That means the most draw is already on your starter battery and it will take the most to recharge if left that way, you may never get it to switch unless you are running 30 or 40 miles. More discussion needs to be had before you invest to find out you are never able to charge the first battery enough to switch.
