I have a skimmer transducer mounted at the bottom of the hull port side at the bottom of the jack plate(not up underneath). It was hooked to a LMS337 that did not lose the bottom when on plane. I am putting an Elite 7 Chirp in and the ducer is a little smaller and wont fit ine other ducers bracket. Just wondering if this is a fluke, I iwould like to mount it close to the same place but have read I may need to tuck it up underneath, I hate to drill more new holes then neccessary but only want to do it once.https://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a5d9 … 1787130366

I would seriously think about putting it in the bilge. Ive done it both ways and even one install with a switching unit on it where I could switch from one to the other. I couldnt tell a nickel worth of difference in the sensitivity of the two. With a bilge installation, no holes and the transducer is protected.

Bilge is kind of tight. There is an old puck in there and not much room. Being an HDI wont it still lose enough sensitivity to effect the clarity? Will the Elite take an external temp probe?

Not sure about Elite with Chirp. The units I installed in my BassCats were HDS 8 and 9 touch. 2d transducers went in bilge and the SI transducers went on jackplate. The old transducer in bilge can be removed. I had to remove a couple hoses from the pumps to access the area better. I tried the 2X4 method of removal and was uncomfortable with how hard I was hitting it. After further assessment went with a curved pry bar that put the force of the blow between hull and transducer. That did the trick.

I had good success using a heat gun carefully, the whole circle of old adhesive came out in one piece with the old ducer. I still scuffed up the area with sandpaper before mounting the new one. Mine was Humminbird not chirp.
