what do you guys think about the EFI mercs, Im looking at 2 boats an 05 and 06 which both have 200EFIs on them
Depends, The 2.5L Merc. is just about bulletproof, but a little weak on the low end. While the 3.0L is a monster, and will pass anything but a gas pump ! Both have great track records, and are great engines,,,,so i dont think you can go wrong, just pick your poison, D.
As far as dependable, they are that. I personally like the 3.0 much better than the 2.5, because of the torge the 3.0 has. They are not as good on fuel as the Optis but very dependable. I have a 3.0 EFI 05 model and it performs very well. Not one bit of trouble so far. Just cant afford to hot rod all over the lake, but really isnt that bad at moderate speeds. Ive yet to hear anybody that really dislikes the EFI except for maybe the fuel usage. But, if youve never had an Opti I guess you wouldnt know the difference! I do like mine though! If you like the boat, I wouldnt worry about the motor. Hope this might help some.
Ive only ran the 2.5 blocks, and had 0 problems. Very solid motor, maybe not as strong as a 3.0 liter in torque, but does not like “the back seat” comparison either. Never had problem running low mid 70s with the 2.5. (74 by GPS steady, not just once). EFIs certainly are better than the old carbs, slightly less fuel efficient than Optis, if run properly. Kind of like, a Taurus has slightly less performance than a Mustang GT…96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
They all consume gas at WOT. I have run 250 Pro XS, 225 Pro XS, 200 Optimax, 250 Pro XB ( now thats a gas hog), 200 2.5 EFI and 200 3.0 EFI. I have been fortunate and never had any problems with any of them but, I perform routine maintenece on my motors. The Optimax really shines in the mid rpm range when it comes to fuel economy. To answer your question the EFIs are proven and almost bullet proof if you maintain them. If I had to pick between the 2.5 and the 3.0 200 EFI I would pick the 3.0 hands down. I heard a guy describe the 200 3.0 as a pit bull on steroids. Ever once in awhile you will have the need for speed and you will definitely have it with the 3.0, especially on a Pantera. Good Luck! I had a 97 2.5L 200 EFI on a PII and it was a runnin dude and got nearly as good of fuel mileage as an Opti, something like 4 or 4.5 mpg WOT. Gas was almost NEVER an issue. But holeshot was. After quite a while of tweaking and tuning I got it to come out of the hole somewhat acceptably, but never as good as I wanted. And I had to go to a Trophy to do it so that cost a couple mph. I now have a 04 3.0L 200 EFI on a PIV and holeshot is NOT an issue AT ALL. It has all the torque I want and more and it sounds like a hot rod no matter what the rpmss. But it does drink the gas; between 1.6 and 2.1 mpg WOT and mid-range respectively. Ive never had not even a minutes trouble with either one of them either. DekeDeke
Mercury EFIs are maybe the most reliable engines ever built in my opinion!
i have an 05 3.0 on a pantera 4 and it will flat out run. i havnt had anything to complain about either. it will just about out run anything on the water. in fact i had a guy to try to buy the motor a while back while at the lake. both are good motors, but if given the option i would take the 3.0 just for the added torque it will provide.
The 3.0 is the most bullet proof, and the highest fuel consumption. As said, both are good and “pick your poison”. BCB
I bought the efi instead of the opti on my 07 Sabre. Not for the price difference but the reliability. I have owned them in the past and they are simply great engines.
