I have an 04 Merc 200 EFI that the engine oil tank is leaking around the cap. Check the cap and it does not appear to be stripped, however, I cant tighten it. I was going to just replace the tank until I saw what the cost was. WOW $75.00 was the cheapest I have seen so far…… for a small plastic bottle. I was wonder if I could just seal the cap with gasket sealer or something like that? Has anybody else had this problem? The oil sure does make a mess and drips for days after I try to clean it up.Thanks guys!!!

The times I have see these tanks leak they have been cracked around the cap

I have seen issues with the caps on the oil tanks. mostly the outer threaded ring will crack. It has an O ring seal and dont need to be made really tight. But most are like me if tight is good tighter is better. I really feel like from what I have seen that the oil over time makes the plastic ring brittle This is a pressurized system the pressure in the tank comes from the engine which pushes the oil to smaller tank under the engine cowl. in fact I have been meaning to get a spare myself

Just order a new cap.

The oil reservoir on the 04 200EFI is sold as a assembly you cant buy just a new cap..You might be able to find a good used one if you have any boat junk yards around…Sherm

Here are two Marine salvage yard that are great guys. One in Grove Oklahoma, Fankies Marine Repair & Service Phone 918-786-8180 and the other is in Camdenton Missouri, FnA Marine 573-480-5644. Both will ship you the item if they have. Hope they can help.

Thanks guys, I will break down and buy a new tank. The biggest problem with the cost is that I just spent $2400 to replace a tubro on a VW TDI. I want things fix right so I will spend the money to keep oil off my Cat and keep the 200 from blowing up.
