Last time I went to the lake, I had no trouble with the motor. I loaded it on the trailer and brought it home. Went to the lake Saturday and turned the switch, and it sounded like the battery was dead. The motor would turn once and quit trying. The volts showed 12.3, so I knew it wasnt the battery. I took it to the dealer and he puts the motor in gear and the prop wont turn. How do you lock a lower unit up without running? Thank goodness it is still under warranty. By the way it is a 2008 Merccury 250 Pro XS.

Sounds like the coils, my 2008 250 pro xs did the same thing.

If the motor is not running and you put it in forward or reverse the prop will not turn. If it is neutral the prop will turn. Sounds to me like your battery connections might need cleaning. Just my thought.GeorgeGeorge

not sure if it is a coil issue or not but I have the same motor, and same colors on my puma, but that motor was famous for bad coils! Good luck

The compressor could be locked up. Take the belt off and see if shell turn over.

The dealer said it was the foot. It made no sense to me, and that is why I put that on here. The prop should still turn if it is in gear, it would just click when turning, right??????

It will turn in gear just not free. It probably is the lower unit. I had a Yamaha that did that once, I thought it was the powerhead locked up but I took the l/u off and it fired right up. It must be locked up where the shaft goes in the top of the lower unit. That would allow the prop to spin in neutral but not in gear.

Sounds like the seals leaked and everything was fine until it sat and the bearing then seized when they cooled.
