Hey guys, Taking a trip to Falcon Lake in a couple of weeks (maiden voyage in new Puma!) and have a couple of questions as to permits and licenses. What is the best way to handle getting a Mexican fishing license and do you need a Mexican boat permit? I read recently online that you now do NOT have to have a Mexican boat permit but I want to make dang sure I do things by the book while in Mexico. Also, any tips on baits and locations for best success, as this is our first trip down there, would be greatly appreciated. Tony D2017 Eyra / 250 Merc Pro XS
Im not sure about Falcon but I am guessing it is the same as Amistad. In the Del Rio area for the same issues at Amistad, many conveinence stores which carry tackle carry the Mexican licenses and permits. Also, usually any resort that is associated with the fishing industry there, or a local boat/marine or tackle dealer will have them. At Amistad we found them easily at conveience stores and a resort near the lake. Good luck… Need anyone to head down with you and help catch some of those monsters ???????
When are you coming. The fish are moving up and back out right now due to all the fronts this time of year. DO NOT bring mono. 20lb floro or at the smallest 50lb braid. We even throw spinnerbaits on 20-25 lb line. Start working out now as these fish will break your wrist. When are you coming? I live in Corpus and will be going down prefishing for upcoming tournaments. Give me a shout and Ill help you as much as possible. CONGRATS on the new Puma, I absolutely love mine. I put the 27th coat of wax on it a few weeks ago and Ive only had it a year and a half. Dave 361-438-3575
Just researched it today for Amistad. Im pretty sure its the same for Falcon, differiant lake same Mexico. You need a permit for the boat (make sure you bring your boat registration for the permit becuase they said the permit is for the boat and cant be swaped) and a fishing license for everybody on the boat, whether theyre fishing or not. They offer options for the length of the permit/license but I was only interested in an annual. I forget which price is which, but one of them costs around 55 dollars and the other is around 45 for a year. They are good one year after the purchase date unlike 1 Sep for Texas licenses.
Its the same as Amistad. If you dont want the Mexican license or the boat permit you dont have to have. Theres a good ramp to put in just south of Zapata. Theres a tackle store practically across the street from where you turn into a neighborhood to get down to the ramp. Flip bushes and throw big spinnerbaits and youll catchem.
Carl from Anglers Lodge and Tackle at Amistad claims that the boat permit has been suspended by the Mexican Government if you are sportfishing . He also has the official Mexican document that covers it. You only have to have a Mexican Fishing License now. Here is the thread on the Texas Fishing Forum that covers the topic.James
Wow, I just talked to one of those places on 90 today and they said I needed one. Well have to verify that one, hate to be stopped by the policia with a copy of this thread as proof — lol Thanks for the heads-up jewalston!
Whatever the case, When fishing on the Mexican side, be for SURE you are all good ! The stories of Bass fisherman getting tied up in a mess in Mexico abound. Heard of boat confiscations ( and you will never get it back ) drug smugglers pointing guns and telling you to ” nice boat, get out ” and the 50 cal mexican gun boats.. Even a 300 hp will not outrun a 50 cal bullet. The best one I heard ( these are all stories now ) is sawing off your hitch at night from the truck at the hotel. Taking the boat and trailer to the lake, launching the boat connected to the trailer, and driving the entire rig to the other side of the Lake. This one is a little hard to believe, but have heard it. There is a really scary tale, that is true.. Of a couple of guys who wound up a the wrong bar / eatery in Mexico. Lucky they came out alive. If I can find the link, I will post it. Man, I love excitement while Bass fishing : ) Just make SURE all papers are good. Most never, ever have a problem fishing in Mexico. From recent reports from friends who fished the recent Stren series last weekend or maybe two weeks ago. They lost count at 30 for 10 lbs ers being brought into the scales. Everyone said Lake Falcon is one of the hottest lakes in all the US right now.. Amistad…. not so good from at least since fall.Last edited by BasserTX on January 24th, 2008, 4:23 am, edited 1 time in total.
