Planning to go to one of these lakes end of January Going to drive and pull a boat Which is recommended as far as accommodations and hassle free as far as passports etc.. Thanks Tim
Falcon is a USA reservoir on the Mexican border, with no need for a passport if you do not leave your boat. El Salto is in Mexico and must leave the Continental USA, with border crossing. Amistad and Falcon both are border reservoirs, sharing Mexico. You may see some Federales, though you could fish USA only as well. Choke Canyon is all USA waters with no border issues. BCB
Im not real sure but I dont think you can put your boat on El Salto but dont quote me on that, even if you go to Falcon you still have to drive through a US checkpoint on the way back, but no passport is required, when the boarder patrol agent asks if your a US citizen just tell him “Jess” just kidding, they probably wont think that is too funny08 Bass Cat Pantera IV 08 Mercury 200HP OPTI 08 NISSAN TITAN CC 4×4 07 POLARIS OUTLAW 500
A word of warning about El Salto. You can drive, but there have been numerous problems in that general area with kidnappings and murders of the locals. If you want to go to El Salto, you need to hire one of the good lodges there. I suspect they have to pay a tribute of some kind to protect their clients, but that is Mexico for you. Falcon, Amistad, Choke are all great alternative. I recently heard that on Falcon and Amistad you better be off the water, including in the US part, a little before dark. My buddies that went said they cleared out of several places when the locals came around.
My suggestions. 1. Falcon – in Texas and no passport needed 2. Sugar lake – 15 minutes from Falcon in Mexico. Better than El Salto or Falcon 3. Choke – completely in Texas 4. El Salto- in Mexico
I know a couple of guys from Arkansas that went down to Falcon this past spring they fished several days and caught some good fish. I think they met a guide after a couple of days and he convinced a couple of them to go to sugar lake… Keep in mind they had no passport im sure it was a sneak you over and fish a few hours kind of trip… Well they caught alot of fish on sugar but they ran into some federales and they held them a couple of hours and harassed them a little before allowing them back over the border… Another one of those guys wanted to go night fishing he said he tried it but got scared after about a hour of very suspicious activity on the water….. This was a very interesting trip from what all i heard…
Keep it in the states…. We need all the economic boost we can get. There have been a lot of problems on the border lately. Id stay close to the US side unless I had solid advice otherwise from someone that lives down there. Good luck.

El Salto- in Mexico Please read this hotlink of how Charlie Haralson fishing quide was kidnapped coming back from Sugar Lake. http://209.189.226.235/st…6/sports_20061214019.php I would not step foot in Mexico after that story! My brother and I went last year at this time and had a blast with Charlie. Hes an awesome guide. He fishes until he locates them for you then puts down his rod so you can put them in the boat. Now that is how a guide should treat his customers! FlyswatterLast edited by Flyswatter on November 5th, 2009, 3:13 am, edited 1 time in total.
I am about to go on my third trip to Falcon on Nov 18 it is a awesome lake to fish. I buy my Mexico permit but I have never had a problem on there side, I just see locals running their gill nets but they never bothered me. Go to FalconLakeTackle .com and read the reports. Tom and his brother Tom are a trip, very good people and they also fish Sugar Lake regular. I went in Feb when the lake was 2 over pool and caught some nice fish, went back in June and the wind blew like hell and made it nearly imposable to fish. Choke is another lake where you cant get out of the wind but if you hit it right you can put some good ones in the boat. Falcon is 13.5 feet low now and it was 25 feet low when the elites crushed them, just give Tom a call before you go and he can tell you all you need to know. Good Luck and post your results for where ever you go .Last edited by jigging on November 5th, 2009, 8:16 am, edited 1 time in total.
Guys, I was involved in a major car accident in Mexico several years ago. I know a lot of people go down there with no problems but, let me tell you from my experience, when you leave the USA, you leave all of your rights and freedoms. You are in the hands of their mercy. I would love to go back but, it aint going to happen unless I can fly in and fly out with some reputable outfitters.
