My wife and I are taking our first trip down to Falcon Saturday and I was wondering if anyone has any pointers. I hear the fish are following the water up to the banks from all the flooding. Is HW 16 safe at night or is it infested with deer? Any suggestions on what area of the lake to start fishing at? We have Mexican licenses. Thanks
John…when we drove down in March of 07 we went 16 and counted 53 deer and a bobcat. You have to stay on your toes with the deer on 16. I would start on the main lake bushes down toward the dam on the points and then go from there…there are a lot of coves up the American side down that direction and they all hold fish. State Park has a darn nice ramp. Good luck and let us know how you do…oh and dont forget your braid cuz your gonna need it on everything dont mess around with mono unless it is 20lb+. Judd Lasiter
Thanks Judd
Good luck down there at Zapata . Be safeYour Signature …
John, Check this thread out on driving there. More info on “black n whites” and “eats” along the way… http://texasfishingforum….nio_to_Falcon#Post2674166
basscatsmeow….John = JPost Youre welcome John good luck and have fun it is one awesome fishery! JL
i figured there was that possibility… lol… but good info for others as well
Thanks guys. Judd, any reason you launched out of the state park vs Zapata? It looks like its a 30 mile trip to get over there from 16. Was it because of the water levels at the time? I called Falcon Tackle, they were really helpful. Its been a long time since Ive tried a new lake, Im an Amistad junkie, Im pumped! Get ready Pant2, this will be our scouting trip.
John, Went down for the first time about a month ago now. If you are staying in Zapata, ( which we did not ) it really does not make sense to launch at State park. ( about a 20 min or so ride) We stayed at Falcon Heights Motel. Looks like a real dump from the outside, but inside is tile floors, clean and $40.00 a night cash The people are really friendly, they have a huge outdoor covered kitchen type area for ya to hang out and cook steaks and tell stories about that monster that locked ya up in a tree. Never unloaded my boat, never locked my truck, did not even lock the door of the room. Totally safe and very quiet. Ramp is 2 mins away ( State Park ) Not sure about Zapata. Would not feel the same there. Tigers is about a 4-5 min ride away in a Cat Few tips- 1. Bring a broom stick – at least a 7.5 Extra Heavy. 2. I would not use braid, unless you use a leader. ( you will get much more bites ) 3. I used 25 lbs Yo Zuri hybrid and it was killer. Did not lose one fish. 4. Yes, be careful on 16 if the deer are out. Speed limit is 75 mph. Would not hit 80 though, a lot of DPS hiding around looking for illegals. 5. We found a full size brush hog or similar, trigged with a 3/8 tungsten was awesome in the trees. ( put it right in the middle of the thickest tree, or the lone tree by its self ) 6. Get a mex license from Falcon tackle, great fish over there. Seems like less pressure. ( watch out for gill nets though. Bring a sharp knife, if ya get in one and have to cut it out, pack up and leave that area. Some of those netters do not take kindly to cutting their nets, even when you have no choice. Best just leave. ) 7. The lake is rising fast, spinner baits, flukes, ect in 1 to 3 is whacking em good. 8. Check out Lake Falcon tackle ” Flash fishing Report ” for the best info. ( great people there, stop in and they will tell you everything you need to know ) 9. Get ready for the best fishing trip you ever had in your life. Where a 3lbs fights like a 8 !! ( I am not kidding either. ) 10. Made a little vid of the action while we were there if ya want to check it out. http://www.youtube.com/user/austineric Have fun, and please give us a report when you return. ( damn, I want to go now too..
John we went in the spring and the wind was blowing pretty good and wanted to fish down there so we trailered down there and fished those areas. It was while I was between boats and waiting for my new one so we took my buddies boat and it was an 18 fter so I didnt want to have a sore back for the ride home (wasnt a BCB). We stayed at Oso Blanco and used their ramp the first day and fished the north end of the lake. We didnt experience any fewer bites from braid due to the water color but a big mono or flouro would do fine too. Oh and tx is right about the fish fighting…I would pick Falcon over Amistad anyday and I loved Amistad I just think Falcon is mobetter JL
