I am about to go nutz trying to keep my 04 Sabre shiny and new and the more that I try the more oxidation is showing up. I do have the worst color to keep clean and from oxidizing, Black. I am wondering if I have done something to promote it or actually cause the grey film that looks like oxidation to develop. I wax my boat about every two months and in between I use lemon Pledge after washings and to add a good shine. As of late the top cap is just getting greyer and greyer or rather a film that I can not get off. It is a very good looking boat and I want to keep it that way, any help or advise will be appreciated. ElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud
It sounds like the oxidation and you will need to polish it with a mild compound and remove the UV damaged layer. BCB
I have had really good luck with Bass Boat Saver (I use it every time I pull it out of the water) and 3M marine products…
Bass Boat Saver is a nice product to use to wipe the boat down after each use, but it will do nothing to remove any oxidation. Oxidation needs to be compounded out, or wet sanded off if it is severe enough. Gel coat is very porous with microscopic pores that get filled in with the oxidized gel, turning the gel hazy/milky colored……try a mild polishing compound first if the oxidation is just starting usually this will remove it.If not, try Meguiars oxidation remover, it is a little more aggresive than a polish and should remove it….then rewax with a good Carnauba wax. http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product_detail.a … EG+GLAZE+1&.&. Some boats get so oxidized that nothing short of wet sanding and compounding/glazing will remove the oxidation. Here is a before and after pic of a P4 that was severley oxidized, then wet sanded…….Malibu Silver colored P4 ( Black ) Before After Last edited by StanH on August 22nd, 2008, 11:32 pm, edited 2 times in total.
Stan Nice pictures and great post….Is there a chronic problem with Black??? .I use the 3M products to shine and polish the boat every couple of months and the Bass Boat Saver to maintain the gloss between waxing….
No problem with the Malibu colors that I am aware of….this particular boat just was not kept up cosmetically, the entire boat was oxidized like you see in the pic……it was wet sanded , etc back in Feb and is still looking good now…. If you need any info on the process I have a thread written on it over on BBC under Basscat7. http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zerothread/311487
FYI: All of the flakes have the same gel coat. The color is poly flake added to the clear and the clears are all the same. No differences, just flake colors.
Stan, What year model is the P4? Mine looks like it is doing the same thing just not to that point yet. I keep mine in the garage unless it is on the water and I am still watching it get worse. I just want to make sure that I am not the cause and then fix it for the long haul. ElwoodElwood…..Bass Cat Proud
it was mine Elwood. it is a 2003 and it seemed like it was never waxed. the wetsanding was hard work but well worth it here is a link to all the before and after pics share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AaM3DRm3bNGLC5A
Elwood…… 3 things are needed for Oxidation: Oxygen, Heat and UV radiation. Eliminate one of the three and you will slow down the process. A good wax or sealant will help to eliminate this. This wax layer diffuses (refracts) both UV and infrared radiation from the sun. Without the wax/sealant coating, the radiation is absorbed by the pigment in the gel coat causing it to over heat, and trigger the chemical reaction that will dry out, dull and oxidize the surface. The 2 most used ways to prevent oxidation are Wax and Polymer sealants. Protect the Gel Coat with a paste wax. Any good paste wax with a high Carnauba content will protect. Most retail waxes only contain between 3 % and 5 % pure Carnauba, the more Carnauba, the higher the price. Cons = paste waxes will start to break down and melt in High air temps/humidity usually in high 90 degree temps. High air temps and friction from the water will remove a lot of the wax layer. If boat is used in these conditions, paste wax should be applied every couple of months, or sooner. it is Hard to find high Carnauba content wax, and can be very expensive. Collonite makes some decent high Carnauba waxes : http://www.waxbytes.com/marine.html Another option is a Polymer Sealer for the gel coat. One of the best made is a product called Pro – Tec. http://www.protecproducts.com/products.html A Polymer sealer that forms a chemical bond with the Gel Coat to seal the pores preventing contaminants from settling in the pores. I have been using Pro-Tec for 8 years..I fish nothing but dirty, stained Tidal Waters on the Upper Chesapeake Bay river systems, Have a white hull/top cap/blue sides 2003 Pantera III that still looks factory white…..scum like wipe right off the Pro – Tec sealant.
