First time with Motor Guide: Need your help not the best first impression

On first TM plunge with my MotorGuide it was going in crooked (vertically) in the water. How do I correct this? What gives? See pic….

Tighten the knob on the front pivot so the TM wont tilt out/under when you give it power. The knob is visible in your photo, north of the “M” on the Motorguide logo. If it kicks under, just reverse direction and step on the go button–it will straighten up.I use a “band wrench” on mine to tighten, like you use on an oil filter, to get maximum grip…Gary Hollander

Gary,Thanks for the helpful info. Much appreciated. Kinda learning my around with MG TMs. My first in a long time and getting used to it.

Fly,More important question….Did that contraption hanging off your line catch any fish and do you have a sore right arm from throwing it?

Now you see why you use to have minn-kota.LOL Sorry i had too….I took my MG off and installed a Fortrex on my sabre and havent looked back.

Done this many a time first retract the motor onto the boat. Then loosen both of the big plastic knobs. With the motor still on the boat lift the motor head (piece with the prop). last with the motor still retracted tighten the knobs as mush as you can and I mean hard!! I even use a rubber mallet to the point that I worry about breaking the plastic altough I have never broken it in 15 years.It should then be vertical when deployed. If the knobs are too loose when you go backwards and hit high speed the motor will fold under the boat, then it is a pain to bring back aboard.Irv

Yesterday I did experienced how the MG break release works (not a bad thing). Had a crankbait snagged in 15-20 mph winds yesterday, Id be lying if I said I wasnt dog cussing the wind (actually myself for trying to feather a cast in that wind), I stepped on my MG foot pedal (remember now first time on the MG pedal) retrieve my KVD 1.5, lost orientation on foot pedal power button and shot right into the log. The break worked perfectly. Thats how I discovered to loosen those two knobs and yanked the TM head back into place. Who needs instructions. Boilerfishin, yes A-Rig works. Used it twice on limited basis (still breaking-in new motor on my new SabreFTD). The A-Rig is the real deal. I had a double on the third cast.
