I have seen them crack and get so worn that the splines give out. They are designed to give way to protect the other more expensive parts of your lower unit. In an emergency, if you dont have a spare you could just tighten your nut as tight as possible to compress whats left and that could get you back to the landing (maybe). It would be smarter to have a spare.Everyone should believe in something. I believe Ill just go fishing!
