I am hoping someone is an expert at identifying the type of fluid that I am constanly seeing at the back of my boat floating on top of the water all around the jackplate and transom. Its been doing it for several trips now and I know something is leaking. When in storage in my shop the concrete below the motor is clean, nothing leaking then.Could be gas, gear oil, hydralic fluid….etc Not really a strong odor or anything.Plan on taking it to the dealer this week and would like to give them some better info since it is no longer in warranty.Hard to describe the apparant color. Maybe a slight blue and silver tint to it.Anyone have any advise.Thanks

Could be just about anything. The mechanic will find it. Thats what hes getting paid to do.

Hydraulic trim, gear lube or hydraulic steering fluid. Could be unburned oil also if your prop is carboned up, though doubtful.

Ive seen the small oil reserve tank under the cowl leak if its a mercury.

Most commonly in EFI engines.

Thanks guys. Maybe its the trim. Hope its not the lower unit. Already had one torquemaster replaced( When under Warranty).Wonder why it doesnt leak just a little when out in my shop.Doug

Sounds like power trim fluid to me. had that happen years ago when a seal went bad on a 70hp merc. John

A quick pressure test on gearcase will tell the story on the seals.15 lbs for 15 minutes if you got a Stevens tester, or take it to someone who has one.I doubt it is the gearcase. Most of the time a gearcase leak is bi-directional. Check to see if you have water in it.Probably a light oil like engine oil or hydraulic oil.What does the sump in your boat look like?
