Looking to buy my first Bass Cat and test drove one prior to the holidays (Cougar FTD). One thing I noticed is the foot control for the trolling motor in the recessed area appears to be much closer to the nose of the boat than other brands. You really feel like you are on the nose of the boat when sitting on the butt seat. Is it just perception or is it really closer to the front than other brands? Feels a bit awkward but certainly puts you out front!
I purchased an 08 Cougar in August. I thought the location was a little awkward the first time out. After the second time out, I did not even think about it! It works great and I really enjoy being all the way forward. It makes a huge difference and give you tons of fishing room all around you. If you happen to fish with another person, they can easily share the front deck with you and you wont be in each others way! I do know that I wont go back to being towards the middle of boat and trying to cast again! I have also taken notice how low the trolling motor sits when its on the deck, I love that also, its not sticking up 3 feet and blocking the view in front.
Just purchased an 08 Puma felt the same way in the showroom the TM was way up front (thought I might not be able to stay in the boat) but after using it in rough water the fishability was awesome and comfortable.
Yes, it is moved forward more so than other brands. It might take some getting used too yes but as Senko said once you do get used to it then you wont want to go back to the others. You will find that BCB utilizes every inch of the boat and that is one example of that. One reason why I never felt the need for BCB to offer a 21ft boat, the 20s BCB has fishes as good and as big as many of the competitors 21 with a better ride than almost all (I would say all but you wont believe me until you get in some rough water in one) of the other 21s. If you fish 2 up front you will love that extra foot you just gained too. Spend some more time in it you will find you will prefer it…I never use a butt seat unless waves are almost breaking over the bow. Judd Lasiter
I do wish my seat post was a couple inches farther forward, but the pedal being that far forward is great when you are fishing shallow cover or boat docks.
I agree, I wish the seat post was a couple of inches forward on my 94 Eyra, but I love the extra the way the forward position of the TM pedal gives you more room up front. My son and I can both fish from the front of the boat (I added a deck extention), if the situation calls for it, in a boat that is just 17 11″ long.
That is one reason I enjoyed the deck layout comparied to other mfgs to use the trolling motor on a Cat you will be put on point. BassCat does not waste area by moving it back to get in your way while fishing. BassCat uses every bit of there boats for fishability and it starts at the bow. I do a lot of shallow water fishing allot. With the front deck lay out like it is I can side arm or roll cast, keeping my baits close to the water for small water entry without comming in contact with any part of the boat.
I second all of the above. When casting, pretty much any way you want you dont even have to think about hitting anything with those sometimes (usually) expensive rods or baits. Ive only slightly ticked the TM a couple of times, and youve almost got to try to even do that. I really like that whole layout, and cant think of any way to really improve on it. You guys have me sold!
The trolling motor pedal is further forward than most boats. I like this for several reasons… 1. It gives me more room on the front deck, which is especially nice when my partner is standing up there with me. 2. You dont have to cast over the head of the trolling motor. You can actually “swing” your lure close to the water and never worry about tearing up your lures by hitting the trolling motor. I can skip a jig to the back of a dock or throw a blade just over the surface for a quiet entry easier because of the angle I can make a cast. 3. When youre bed fishing in the spring, you cannot beat being on the tip of the boat. It makes seeing and casting for the “big mommas” a lot easier. 4. If you notice, the depthfinder is not backmounted on the front deck. This is super nice. A backmounted depthfinder on the front of the boat drives me crazy. If the sun hits it and causes a glare, you cannot adjust the unit – you have to physically move. By having the depthfinders on a mount like BCB does it, you can move the depthfinder to any angle you want it and can still stand and fish where you are most comfortable. I hope this helps.
