Topic: Fuel Guage Problem ?

I have an 04 Classic w/3.0 Liter 200 EFI. With ignition key in off position, fuel guage reads “E”. With key in on position, fuel guage reads 1/4 tank. Even when I know the tank is full the guage only reads 1/4. If running close to WOT in ruff water guage will bounce back and forth between 1/4 and 1/2. But when you stop, guage returns to 1/4 (even when full). Sensor is under drivers seat. I can see a sensor wire (yellow) and a ground wire (black). Both are solidly connected. Question is: are there any tests I can run to determine if the problem is the sensor or the guage? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, LR Mike

Just remove the sending unit and check the sender for accuracy. We dont recall when we went to the WEMA senders used now. They were somewhere in the area of your production. If it is a WEMA, then you have no adjustment. You should be able to move the donut on a WEMA up and down to check the accuracy. If it is a Rochester arm type, then you can bend the arm to improve accuracy. Also some of the Rochesters were against the sidewall of the tank in which you can also bend it sideways. The sending units are five (5) hole patterns and they only go in one way. You need to mark it upon removal to make sure you hit hte timing right going back in. BCB

I removed the sensor from the fuel tank. If you hold sensor relatively level and move float arm up and down, the guage reads perfectly. Return the sensor to the tank and it once again only reads 1/4. Tried it twice, same results both times. What should I do next? Plus, while I am in clean-up fix-up mode, any suggestions for a livewell pump-out system? As always, Many Thanks and waiting to hear.

The pump out is a pretty simple do it your self job. The sender we would replace with the newer style WEMA. They do not hardly fail!
