Well I went ahead and did the 360 plunge. Some warnings if anybody takes the plunge! Make sure you have a unit that is compatable. I thought I did my research and the 1197 would work. Low and behold, it is not compatable. That forced me (since the 360 was now installed) to take the jump to the 1198. The 360 instructions are VERY vague. It shows a GPS antenna and a weather sense installed but nothing else. I had the 1197 interlinked to the 898 on the bow and a weather sense. All worked well untill the 360 went on. The 360 is a ehernet unit that connects to the ONLY ethernet connection on the 1198. When I left the weather sense connected through a Y to the 898, got a hate message on the screen that said you screwed up on the network connection and I am not going to tell you about it again! did connected the interlink and things started working.Back to the GPS, nowhere does the 360 tell you to “if an external GPS antenna is installed (as all the higher end compatible units do) remove the connection to the units GPS antenna and replace with the 360 GPS SENSOR antenna. The 360 antenna has a feature that allows the unit to know what direction the boat is pointing even if not moving. So, now I had the 360 connected to a compatible 1198, with the GPS sensor antenna. NO WORKY! GPS data was available with the old antenna installed, not the new one. Why, surely the 1198 has the correct software version! NOT! You have to go to humminbird site, create an account, register the product and get the latest software. This was nowhere in the instructions. SHAZAM! now it works. Went to the lake, so far, worth the effort. There is some additional programing that is required but that is fun stuff. Now the connectivity. The interlink is no longer compatable with the Ethernet based systems once you make the ethernet connection. So, to get the waypoints, weather sense and I hope at least the 360 image on the 898 on the front, had to buy another ethernet hub ($199), and 2 ethernet cables (30 each) spend another hour or 2 on my back under the consle and maybe I will be where I was before but with 360.But, I have a bunch of BPS points now!Milton
Which is a list of 30% of the reasons why we have not supported the concept yet. Nice stuff once it is in operation, again once it is in operation.
It really is slick. I really just got tired of seeing what I just went over, either in regular sonar, or side imaging. all they really need are some better install instructions and a few notes and it would have been a 1 hour job. Milton
Only 30%? Wow, think ill pass on it for a few years…
and just another little tid bit of information. If ya are going to run the 360, power pole does not support that product in regards to a bracket mount, only Johnson Outdoors does. So ya may want to think about that also before you purchase the system, unless you are running Talon Poles, then there will be no issues.
On the mount, I actually bought a PP mount for the LH side of the Puma. I have a PP on the left. I have a slide master jack plate. All I had to do was flaten it a bit (soft steel) and put shims between the mount and the slide adjust bolts to get the clearance for hard LH turns. It does ot mount between the motor and jack plate like the other side. From what I saw of the talon, not sure it would clear the rescue ladder. Milton
sorry, a power pole on the RH side, 360 LH. Milton
Its all about Features, Benefits and Knowledge with who sells it to you, as you found out…….
Well it sounds like you figured out the details!! U might wanna post that on hb chat group, it could score you another 1198 for free!! Or I should say via unit per unit swap!!
