gas tank full for storage or empty – See comment from BCB and Sherm

Wanted to know your recommendation for storing a boat in the winter in Indiana (boat stored in outbuilding). My Pantera II has teh two plastic tanks – I thought it was better to store them without much fuel but I had a friend tell me you should fill em up. I used to fill up my tank on my old boat with a metal tank but I thought plastic was different. Just wanted to get it straight since withing the month I will have to put it in the barn for winter.Last edited by mphenry1.bbcboard on October 1st, 2009, 3:12 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Well, in years past we would have suggested that you top them off. Though in todays fuel world we are hesitant to say that. It would depend on how long you are going to have your rig put away for. If only a couple of months, we would not do anything. If you are sticking it away and it will be several months, we today would burn the fuel down, stick an additive in it and store it. Then you can bump to the concentration suggested on the additive again when you use it again, and fill it up. Thus new fuel will run through those veins to the engine and we feel improve your experience. So we have changed our opinion from the one of popularity in those many previous years. Though we also know how many issues we have seen with ethanol lately that was not a factor in years past. BCB

I agree with BCB on this..With todays fuel quality (crap) and alcohol content I recommend to everyone to run tanks low and leave them low..This gas does NOT keep well and stabilizer will NOT prevent issues ethanol can bring with moisture absorption & phase separation..Phase separation is what happens when gas containing alcohol sits for long periods of time.The alcohol separates out of the gas and you can end up with serious engine issues or damage from it if it does happen… Sherm

I have seen first hand (not in my boat!!) how poorly todays gas stores. Do your self a favor and run the tanks empty or very low, treat whats left and you will be OK. Scott

What Ive been doing (not sure if its really the best idea yet), I got a cheap 12 volt fuel pump and I disconnect the fuel line before it goes to the engine install the pump there, and then pump out the tanks into a can, and put the fuel in my truck. This is on a Puma (2007) , I can empty the two saddle tanks by just sticking a line in the fill cap, but to get the under seat tank empty I hook into the fuel line.

At one time I knew a little about boats and motors, but I guess that isnt true any more. With the advent of DFI motors, ethanol, and everything else new in this changing world, I guess I am outdated. Follow BCBs advice!

We would not run the motor out of fuel, though burn some treated fuel through it. The gaskets and seals all dry more with ethanol and the additives lately. If you dry them out, the softeners that retain the quality are already eaten away, and now the pumps or seals leak or dont work at all. Leave them wet.
