GPS antenna placement (Gary Hollander example)

Hi guys, As Ive mentioned in a few posts before, Im replacing my dual x15 set up with a x28/x27 setup that I will have networked. I will be sharing 1 GPS antenna between the 2 units. Currently my GPS antenna is mounted in the back, but Id like to move it up to the front. There is a small area up front where the antenna would fit, but its at a slant, so the antenna would not face straight up. I was a little worried this wouldnt work, but while browsing some cats for sale I see Garys boat (which he has for sale) has the antenna mounted here. http://www.impactfishing.com/garyhollander/bow.jpg So the question is (to Gary or whomever), are you ok to mount the antenna flush to the boat at an angle, or should I try and build some type of “build up” out of PVC that will angle the antenna straight up? Gary, do you ever lose signal with the way its mounted here? Thanks Chuck

It will be OK to mount there. Ive seen them mounted in multiple locations. Even under the console. Just think about the units that have the built in antennae and how many different angles it might see.

Chuck, as Phil stated. You should be just fine. When you really think about it, our boats are seldom “level” when on the water especially in windy and wavy conditions.

Basstar I wouldnt be surprised if it was mounted there with Silocone that way you dont have to drill any holes in the boat and it can be removed replaced later. I heard someone talking about that here but it was after I mounted mine and then I thought Duh and I mean Duh why didnt I think of that insead of drilling holes in my boat. lol lo lol Live an learn.

MY p11 is mounted in the front works great and its not in the way

No problem mounting it at this angle. You just dont want to mount it sideways or at such an angle that part of the horizon is obstructed. Even then itll still work but itll just degrade accuracy and increase fix times. Mine will eventually fix even 20 back in the back of my garage with the garage door closed, but its not quick nor high accuracy. Deke[font=&QUOT]Deke[/font]

BCB: Have they fixed the interference problem of a couple years ago where the Lowrance units would lose the GPS antenna signal if the two were mounted too close to each other? I havent heard mention of it in quite a while and am seeing lots more of these close proximity placements. Just curious what youve noticed. Deke[font=&QUOT]Deke[/font]

Fluker, I used the twist mount bracket which required two small screws. The lock-on of front signal is almost instantaneous with powering on–much faster than my dash-mounted unit… Never have lost a signal, other than going under some major metal/concrete obstruction like a dock or bridge. Only then momentarily… Good Luck–call me if you want to talk more…

Thanks all. And Thanks Gary. I will be setting up a network and plan to hide all my wires. So Ill probably run my antenna wire into to the boat. I pulled some wires last night and am off to a good start!
