Anyone mount a GPS in the the dash with an internal antenna? Just wondering if it would work as well as one with an external antenna. Im thinking someone on here has tried one by now. Thanks Greg
Most units have the internal antenna located too far toward the back of the unit to get a good signal on a backmount. You will need the external GPS antenna to guarantee a good signal. If you already have the unit, I would suggest a ram mount. Andy Greene Greene Boat & MotorAndy Greene Greene Boat & Motor 828-286-2290 http://www.greeneboats.com
I have a 522 (internal antenna) mounted on a ram mount on top of my console and it works fine however I have heard that if you are doing an in dash install that it might not be optimal. Exterior mount should work well. Irv
The Lowrance HDS units have the antenna in the front of the unit. I have one flush mounted and one gimbal mounted in my boat and have never had a problem with either.
I have a Humminbird 788ci mounted in the dash of my 2002 Sabre, and havent had any proplems. It comes on line in a reasonable amount of time, and seems to be accurate.
I have a Lowrance LMS334C in the dash of my Sabre and have zero issues with it picking up satellites. I believe that being in a fiberglass console on a body of water is no worse than being in a wooded area with my handheld GPS.
I really appreciate everyones respones. If I decide to go in with the internal antenna it sounds like I shouldnt have any problems. Only one way to find out for sure though. Thanks
